Samsung N7100 Galaxy Note II - Second Edition, Revised and Expanded

01.12.2012

... I screamed with all my might:
- And I need a shovel!
- What are you, an eccentric, shouted ?! -
All the guys are laughing.

And everyone is running somewhere
Everyone has a shovel ...

Agniya Barto,
"When the shovel is taken away"

I so wanted to see a stylish case made of beautiful and modern materials in this phone! .. Eh, Samsung, Samsung ... Obviously, perfection and harmony in my world of gadgets will never come. After all, you want to have everything at once - a beautiful case, the best hardware and Android inside, but ... there are no such devices on the market yet.

However, first things first, otherwise the conclusions have already begun to precede the preface - sorry, it hurt - got excited. Let's get started!

If you take a closer look, you can see that the S Pen sits in the nest not quite evenly:

For the rest, there are no complaints about the assembly. The body, as they say, is firmly knocked down, the lid sits firmly, there are barely audible squeaks when squeezed in the area of the camera, but, believe me, this is completely insignificant. The assembly could be called impeccable, for a small trifle - the volume and power keys have a noticeable lateral backlash. This was not the case before. And if you shake the device hard, you can hear a quiet clatter of the volume key against the case. It seems to be a trifle, but not very pleasant.

The device, of course, has an undemanding appearance, but it still cannot be called cheap. It does not look like the budget solutions of the same Samsung, and, like the Galaxy S III, the Note II cannot be confused with them. The plastic of the back cover is very strong and resilient, I can easily bend the cover in half, and just as easily it restores its original shape:

And, no matter what they say about the glossy surface, there is no great harm from it. It slips in the palm of your hand no more than the grooved back cover of the first Note, it is not particularly susceptible to external influences - the same glossy cover of my Galaxy S III has not acquired a single scratch or abrasion in 4 months of operation, but, I must admit, I handle phones very carefully ...

On the other hand, the newly-minted Nokia Lumia 920 also has a glossy plastic body (except for black), but for some reason you can't hear the mass unrest from the fans of the brand?

However, many users find the Note II's appearance elegant and attractive, and, in all honesty, there is some truth in this - sometimes, casting a glance at my Note II lying on the table, I catch myself thinking that I am pleased to look at it.

Yes, handprints are visible - but only at a certain angle to the light source. And less than the gray version of the phone.

As we can see, after activating the UMS mode, you can see the external memory card in Windows Explorer (as well as in other popular file managers) as a regular removable disk. And copying files of any size in both directions becomes possible.

True, out of surprise, the phone displayed a threatening warning, but in fact the connection went through without any problems.

And the second thing. In the "native" TouchWiz Gallery, the function of rotating the image just with the pad of a finger stopped working, which was so conveniently implemented on the first Note. Either this time the developer forgot about it, or something else, but there is such a fact.

That's all with the shortcomings of this TW version. Let's move on to its innovations.

First and foremost, what Google has been begging for so long has finally happened. We are talking, of course, about contact photos. What tricks the users did not go to, so as not to lose a high-quality high-resolution photo when synchronizing with Google! But, finally (and this is largely due to the new version of the Jelly Bean operating system), we got full synchronization with large and high-quality contact photos.

It was nearly implemented in the previous version (on Galaxy S III), we received a large photo of the caller in the full width of the screen, but: a) the photo was a little fuzzy, and b) when syncing, the photo was still compressed (worsened) on Google servers.

But now I just have nothing to complain about. On my computer, on my Google page, I manually forwarded all my contacts, reassigning high-resolution photos to them, then synchronized, and all these photos ended up in the Note II phone book. Now screen incoming call looks like this - provided that a high-quality photo has been assigned to the contact:

Doesn't it look perfect? What? Is the stripe at the top ugly? Ah, bad luck! But - we are dealing with Android, where you can change almost any little thing for yourself. And - voila! - with a slight movement of the hand, we bring the screen of the incoming (and outgoing) call to perfection!

The Gallery has also changed. To some extent, it became more convenient to use it, to some extent the interface has changed, it became possible to view photos not only with the usual tiles, but also this and that:

The user, not paying attention to these beautiful, but useless tweaks, first of all checked - is it possible to exclude folders for viewing in the settings? It turned out - again it is impossible. The user cursed, sighed, closed all these beauties and installed the familiar QuickPic. Ah, Samsung, Samsung ...

However, this is not all with innovations.

The most common question in the profile branch of the Galaxy Note II on the w3bsit3-dns.com forum is still "what kind of tongue came out on my left, some kind of socket, how to remove it?"

In general, anyone else, but I like this "socket", in fact, sternly referred to by the manufacturer as a "multi-screen mode panel", very much to my liking. What is it for? Firstly, by placing the tab under the thumb of the hand with which you are used to holding the phone (and the panel can be dragged along all the edges of the screen, and the tab itself can be moved), you get the ability to launch applications from the panel with one hand. Secondly, it is a truly multi-screen (multi-window, MultiWindows) mode, and you can run two different applications on the same screen, for example, YouTube and an Internet browser. Or a video player and mail client... Or a reader and 2GIS.

Perhaps someone was confused by the extreme screenshot. That's right, the multi-window panel is initially only minimally configurable, and you can't add the applications you want to it. Strange, but the developer did not provide for such a simple and demanded function. Therefore, it is not surprising that very soon a panel modified by craftsmen appeared, allowing you to add any of your applications to it:

Another interesting point (however, this, perhaps, only I have not noticed it before) - in the standard list of applications, built-in help on the main functions has appeared:

For a sophisticated user, this is not necessary, but for many it can be a good help.

In the list of applications that can be used to open a web page, a "browser in a pop-up window" has appeared, this is, in fact, a regular Internet browser that simply appears in a small window, allowing you to partially see the contents of the desktop below it:

One of the most convenient features of TouchWiz - the "shutter" switch panel - has also been developed. We are talking about configuring switches, adding the necessary and removing unnecessary ones, as well as the ability to swap them. Previously, this was solved by third-party software, but now we have received it in the form of a standard setting.

The TouchWiz calendar called "S Planner" got the ability to draw reminders with the S Pen directly on its surface, and a small pop-up window appeared to view reminders entered in the usual way:

As you know, in this model Samsung began to install 2 gigabytes random access memory, naturally, that I wanted to check how it is filled. To admit, what I saw plunged me into a slight shock:

1.42 GB out of 1.75 available! Not weak. But, I must say, this is a "stock" firmware, and all software installed by the manufacturer was properly loaded and took up space. Can't you cut it down somehow? For example, the notorious "hubs", all the same, this service is not supported in Russia:

In addition to the hubs, I also removed a number of other preinstalled programs that I considered unnecessary. The result was not long in coming:

Although ... to be honest, I did not notice the difference in the speed of work. As everything was quick and smooth before cleaning, it remained the same.

And about alternative ways of entering text. Both handwriting and voice input both work and work well. Oddly enough, the Russian language was supported in both cases, although the device was intended for the European market, and the firmware I used was also based on the firmware not for Russia.

Even my crooked handwriting is correctly recognized, recognition errors are minimal. Well, voice input is generally beyond praise. Both typing and handling programs that use voice (for example, Google Now or Assistant) - everything causes some kind of childish delight, creating the illusion that the device is you understands... I repeat - it is the Russian language that is recognized, its support is comprehensive, in contrast to ☺

And in any case, the Russian language module is available for download and installation:

Another novelty is that when you hold your hand over a sleeping phone for a few seconds, the screen is activated with the most important information - the current time, missed calls and messages, as well as the battery level. Responsible for this function is the proximity sensor, the glow of which is perplexing to many.

Well conceived, and it works, but somehow very leisurely. 2-3 seconds pass between the movement of the hand and the activation of the screen.

But the vigilant "eye", following your gaze and not letting the screen go out, had to be turned off altogether - the number of false positives is too high. I don't know what he sees there on my ceiling, but the phone lying on the table often cannot "fall asleep", looking at something up there for a long time ...

And finally, a kind of humorous curtsey from Samsung programmers, the so-called Ink-Effect:

Completely useless, but very popular with everyone. By the way, the color of the "ink" can be adjusted:

Playing media over a network

The AllShare function seemed to me excessively cumbersome, and my TV does not support DLNA. So I tried to play video on my phone from a shared folder home computer over Wi-Fi the most in a simple way, using the X-plore program.

Without any equivocations and unnecessary questions, all the shared folders with multimedia were found on my computer, and the movie started playing quietly. It is just as easy and simple to play music over the network and view photos. That is, as we can see, the bandwidth of the home wireless network is sufficient for this.

GPS, GLONASS and navigation

There is nothing special to say, everything is at the usual high level, satellites are detected quickly (even at the very first launch), communication with them is stable, GLONASS is supported - in any case, these satellites are visible in navigation programs. Let me remind you that the numbers of the GLONASS satellites begin with the number 60.

Stylus - Pen - S Pen

Whatever you call this thing, but its appearance (more precisely, its return) to the Note series was a reason for many to buy. And no wonder - this is more than just a toy.

True, the most common scheme of using the pen so far is just handwritten notes on the go, during a telephone conversation, many indulge in drawing various kalyaks and caricatures of friends ("Look - it's you").

The S Pen can do much more, though. This is both the aforementioned handwriting input, and adding handwritten notes to the calendar, you can set handwritten notes with added pictures and other multimedia as a calendar event, you can edit images in the pre-installed Paper Artist program (not to mention many other graphic editors).

S Note can manipulate your freehand shapes and lines to create accurate geometric patterns and even blueprints. The drawing below was just sketched with a stylus in a minute, the curved lines drawn by hand were transformed by the program on the fly:

It seems to be fun, but in certain situations it can be an invaluable help. Handwritten notes can also be added here, which will be recognized and converted into typed text. As an example of a practical application, this is how my friend @Alex_Shvarz drew a sketch for the craftsmen making a computer desk for him.

For studiosus, the function of recognizing formulas and equations drawn with a pen may be useful, it really works. And not only are the formulas recognized, they can be sent by pressing one key to the well-known site wolframalpha.com, where they will be automatically solved, and you will be presented with the entire course of the solution. Here is, for example, a simple equation I sketched out and the result of its processing on the above site:

Another interesting function - when the button is pressed, the pen works as a kind of screenshot creator. We just randomly outline any area on the screen, and then we are offered what can be done with this fragment - to earn extra money in the editor, send by mail or something else - the choice is great:

What's interesting is that this function even works in a video player, allowing you to cut images from videos on the go:

There is also the possibility of quickly launching applications by drawing in the application, instantly called up by moving the stylus up the screen, the corresponding figure:

Agree, these possibilities of working with the pen deserve attention. Moreover, the pen has been significantly improved compared to the first Note. This and its larger form, which allows you to more confidently hold the pen in your hands, it is much more accurate positioning - now drawing is going exactly where you touch the screen with the pen. This is also pressure recognition - the more you press on the nib, the thicker the line will be, similar to a regular pencil or fountain pen.

However, there are also minor flaws. The pen was a little buzzy when trying to draw in the lower right corner of the screen, however, I rarely draw in these places. I was more worried about the excessive sensitivity of the pen, which was expressed in false positives - sometimes you have not yet touched the tip of the pen to the screen, and it has already begun to draw. It was annoying and the pen had to be taken apart, exposing the adjustment screws.

A small turn of the screwdriver, the nib is assembled, and - the problem was solved! False positives stopped altogether, however, in the corners I had to do a little harder pressure with the stylus to draw, but this is already insignificant, and in the end I was completely satisfied with such an adjusted pen.

Finally, Samsung has made sure you don't forget your pen when leaving:

This function is tied to the motion sensor and is enabled by recognizing your steps in combination with the absence of a stylus in the slot, and can be disabled in the settings.

By the way, at first there was talk about the fact that in place - in the nest - the pen is drawn (sucked in) by a magnet. Yes, once upon a time on the HTC Diamond communicator there was such a magnetic fine-tuning of the stylus, but here, alas, there is no such thing. The nib on the Note II does not retract and is locked inside with a small spring-loaded lever.

And from the stylus theme, I would like to smoothly move to the next one -

The essence of the first test "GPS on the windowsill, 3G" - we charge the smartphone all the way, set the screen brightness to full, activate the 3G Internet, launch the Yandex Maps application (GPS must be active), put the device on the windowsill (for better communication with satellites) and set the time - how long the phone will last until the battery is completely discharged. The Note II Nexus 4 on the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset warmed up to 55-56 degrees during this test.

And, again, as a comparison, the test results of the current flagship from HTC - the HTC One X + smartphone - amounted to 500 units.

The difference is obvious.

According to my estimates, based on almost 3 weeks of using the Note II, its autonomy has increased, compared to the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III, by an average of about 25% -30%. And for some reason it seems to me that this is the result of not only the increased capacity of the battery.

Sew? Is it necessary?

In principle, smartphones on Android in general and from Samsung in particular have already reached such a level that everything in them works, as they say, "out of the box". The legends about the need for long-term tuning and adjustment of the android, the tedious waiting for custom firmwares to work normally are almost a thing of the past - now everything works like that. Sewing business is increasingly becoming the lot of enthusiasts who do it just for their own pleasure, or out of a sense of pure perfectionism. You don't have to root your smartphone, you can update the software on it only in an official way - you practically won't lose anything, and your smartphone will work no worse than a rooted-sewn-altered one, or even better.

And, I must admit, I’m doing this more out of habit - I can’t resist, especially since there is already a large selection of modified firmwares, as well as various little things that improve and expand the functionality of the phone.

That's probably all about this phone. It's time to do

conclusions

You know, this is some kind of problem-free apparatus. Whatever I shoved into him, whatever I sewed, he somehow silently swallows everything and continues to work. Never once did it hang on me, never gave any error, never refused to boot. Although many of the "improvements" that I installed in it were intended for completely different firmware. This is the first and main impression ...

It's just a smartphone - modern, powerful, fast, only its size is slightly larger than most of us are used to. For some, this format is suitable, for others it is not; of course, it is not worth declaring it the most convenient for everyone. Just as you should not put a cross on it, they say, "an uncomfortable shovel for crazy geeks."

The large screen simply provides us with more convenience when performing typical tasks on the phone - surfing the Internet, reading, playing games (including the most resource-intensive ones), watching movies, working with images and texts, and the presence of an S Pen and a specially designed under it, the software completely deduces Note II into the category of unique ones in terms of its capabilities - and all this wealth in conjunction with a very tenacious battery. And the size - what about the size? Go to the store, try on. If it's not yours, it will be clear right away - it's just not yours and that's it.

For the rest, Note II will be the most convenient and irreplaceable mobile assistant - as for me.

Thanks to everyone who read my story to the end.

Smartphone Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100 - overview

The Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone popped up and made me jump off my iPhone. And this, you see, is a serious characteristic. Before the Galaxy Note, I was interested in smartphones from Samsung, but I thought that the corporation still needed to bring these devices to mind - the same Samsung Galaxy S was cute, but had noticeable glitches and inconveniences, and the same applied to the operating system Android version 2. But as time went on, Android gradually improved and by version 2.3.6 (Gingerbread) managed to overcome many of its problems, and by that time Samsung had released a truly revolutionary model - the Samsung Galaxy Note. The revolution was in the size of the gadget, and the size, as you know, even matters. Initially, in the era of the development of cellular communications, phone developers thought about how to reduce them to complete invisibility. Then, when smartphones appeared, phones began to increase - because on a small screen you can't see a damn thing, and you can't really hit the right icon with your finger. an unnecessary purchase of a tablet with such a device. Honestly, when I saw the Galaxy Note at the exhibition, I thought that this model would not have a large number of buyers. Although for myself I decided that I would definitely buy such a smartphone for myself. But practice has shown that Galaxy Note has become very, very popular, and other manufacturers immediately rushed to rivet models with a large display, but so far none of them has come close in quality to Note. Even Apple realized that the iPhone's screen was too small, so in the fifth model it was increased, however, for some reason, only in height. ("And then they immediately sued Samsung for stealing ideas," said the cat Bublik.)

Samsung Galaxy Note

However, the Galaxy Note, for all its merits, turned out a little more than we would like - it was not impossible to hold it in your hands, but a little difficult. Nevertheless, I used it with great pleasure for several months and then was surprised to find out that during all this time I had not even touched my iPad, and it was slightly covered with dust on the shelf. Then Samsung released the third version of its S series - Samsung Galaxy S III, and it turned out to be such a successful smartphone that I immediately switched to it, and I never regretted it. However, here, with all the advantages, the previous minus remained - the screen was slightly small, especially after several months of using the Galaxy Note. Well, plus - after all, the S III clearly has a weak battery. Not deadly sickly, but you have to remember about her all the time in order not to be without a phone at the right time. And now Samsung has released new version Galaxy Note under the expected name Samsung Galaxy Note II. I didn't think about this version for a long time - I immediately went to buy it, because if the first Note was an unusually successful smartphone, then they can't degrade Note II, I counted. But what is really there, whether they made it worse or improved - we will now understand in detail. So, Samsung Galaxy Note II N7100.

Samsung Galaxy Note II

Battery: Li-Pol 3100 mAh
Dimensions: 80.5 x 151.1 x 9.4 mm
Weight: 182.5 g Well, in general, I have never seen a cooler configuration. The most powerful mobile processor (the Galaxy S III has a little worse), as much as 2 GB of RAM, all kinds of communication that you can think of (there is a separate version of this smartphone that supports LTE networks), a very capacious battery - 3100 mAh versus 2500 mAh at the first Note. Plus - the display. Note II is slightly narrower in linear dimensions than the first, but slightly higher. This is good, because the first Note was just too big in width. However, in Note II, with decreasing width, they managed to enlarge the display - 5.55 "versus 5.29" in the first Note! slightly heavier, but quite insignificantly - by 4.5 grams. Delivery and packaging It comes in a box like this. Equipment - smartphone, battery, earbuds, USB-microUSB cable, AC adapter for charging, brochures.
We look at the phone. Very much like the Samsung Galaxy S III, only enlarged. Let's put them side by side. Well, yes, just twins!
Now put the Galaxy Note next to it. As you can see, the old one is wider, the new one is higher.
The Note II's control buttons are exactly the same as those of other smartphones in this series: an oblong Home button (quite convenient) and two touch-sensitive buttons - "Return" and "Menu". Return is on the right, Menu is on the left. By default, these buttons light up only when they are used, but in general, their backlighting is configured in the system - you can make them always glow.
The back cover of the Note II is almost exactly the same as that of the Galaxy S III (glossy plastic), only the speaker is located at the bottom, not at the top. The S Pen is pulled out from the lower left corner. It can only be put in there in one position. A separate S-Pen stylus. The bottom end - a stylus slot, microUSB output, microphone.
The left side end is a volume rocker.
The upper end is the headphone jack and one of the microphones.
On the right side, the power button and a special slot for easy opening of the back cover are located on top. By the way, for my taste, this arrangement of the power button is optimal. On the top, the button is much more difficult to press, and if they even think of placing it on the left, only those who hold the device in their right hand will be able to use such a phone. (Usually they hold it with the left, and point at the screen with the right.)
We open the back cover (it opens without much effort). There is a battery socket, sockets for microSD cards and microSIM. By the way, thanks a lot for microSIM. The Galaxy Note has a landing for miniSIM, and I already killed it with an adapter once - as a result, the entire board was changed. The microSD card is installed without removing the battery, the SIM card can be changed only when the battery is disconnected. Note how much larger the Note II battery is by compared to Note.
I inserted a SIM card, an SD card and a battery - that's it, you can watch how this model works. Display The display here is no longer the same as that of the Galaxy Note. In the old Note, the subpixels were arranged in the PenTile pattern - when each pixel consisted of not three, but two subpixels. This caused certain visual problems to appear. In the second Note, every pixel is RGB normal.

Subpixel patterns in Note and Note II

Matrix - Super AMOLED. It is characterized by very bright, contrasting and saturated colors. (By the way, not all users like this, but I like it.) The brightness margin is such that even in good lighting it is enough to set the brightness to 50-60% to get a very comfortable-looking image. Super AMOLED has two unpleasant features. The viewing angles of this matrix are decent, the brightness and contrast drop slightly when the angles are changed, however, a well-known effect is observed - when, when the angles are changed, the pure white color starts to turn slightly blue. However, if you don't know about this effect, then you don't pay any attention to it, but the second effect is noticeable and very unpleasant. It lies in the fact that the Super AMOLED screen "fades" very noticeably in the sun (under bright illumination of a certain spectrum). It, of course, any LCD displays in the sun "go blind", but it is with AMOLED (and Super AMOLED) displays that this effect is more noticeable than with other matrices. I laid out Galaxy Note II nearby on a sunny day (well, other models on AMOLED), and next to it - Nokia 808 PureView and Sony Ericson Xperia - it was very clearly visible that Nokia and Sony in such conditions keep brightness more or less decently, but on the Samsung Galaxy display almost nothing is visible. , with a demonstration of this effect, but in the photo it cannot be conveyed, so you have to take my word for it. Otherwise, the display is cool. Problems arise only in direct sun. Device operation Display of a loaded phone with TouchWiz shell.

The rest of the desktops.

Here a new concept appeared - a contextual desktop. For example, when you take out the stylus, the stylus desktop is added.

When you connect headphones, a desktop appears with a widget for viewing and listening to multimedia.

When the phone is in roaming, a roaming desktop appears with a convenient widget for the current time in two cities. Moreover, contextual desktops also have their own set of icons on the dock panel at the bottom.

Roaming desktop

The notification area has become more convenient and interactive (when you click on messages, you can make settings, perform some actions, and so on), and additions have appeared in the settings icons at the very top.

Applications installed on the system.

Widgets installed in the system (of which to hell).

Another innovation. When you press the "Return" button for a long time, such a sliding Multi View panel appears on the screen. (This was not the case with the Galaxy S III.)

This panel can be dragged to any side, using the "Change" button, you can change the set of applications. You can turn off the panel by long pressing the "Return" button again. You can simply launch applications from the panel, or you can drag the icon of the desired application to the main screen - two running applications will be opened on the screen at once. This works only with those applications that are in the Multi View panel.

Settings In the settings of version 4.1 (including the specific options for Samsung Galaxy), a lot of interesting things have been added. Here is the entire top level with subsections.

Data usage - statistics on the transferred mobile data with the ability to limit this matter.

In the "Additional settings" - using a smartphone as an access point, setting up a VPN, enabling NFC, S Beam, DLNA. Through AllShareCast, the Note 2 screen can be used in conjunction with other devices that support this technology. Kies is also supported via Wi-Fi, but I do not know who in their right mind uses this program - it is much more convenient to upload media files from a computer, and all sorts of contacts and schedules store in google cloud.

A very useful new option is block mode. I have been waiting for a long time when it will appear in normal mode. This is the shutdown of calls, notifications, and so on for a certain time period (for the night). In this case, you can set contacts for which an exception will be made - that is, they will be able to call.

Display settings. Interesting modes are smart reversal and smart shutdown. Well, you can turn on the display of the percentage of the battery charge (this appeared in the 4th version, thank God). You can also enable / disable context desktops here. Pay attention also to the "Screen Mode" section. Many users complain about the overly acidic colors of AMOLED displays. So, if you put "Natural" or even "Film" in the mode, there will be no more acidity.

Next top settings.

Power saving - nothing particularly interesting: limiting processor performance, lowering the display power level and other background changes in the browser that have little effect. Disabling Wi-Fi in sleep mode, which noticeably affects the battery, is done in additional Wi-Fi settings.

In the "Battery" section, you can see which applications are the most power hungry.

The screen lock can be customized very flexibly.

The lock screen options are also well configurable.

Section "Security".

An interesting section is "One-handed operation". It is, of course, not very relevant for such a "shovel", but it may come in handy for someone.

Backup and reset. In general, it is strange that Google still does not have a good regular backup and restore mode. To quickly restore your applications and settings, you have to use all sorts of third-party applications, and to automate this process you have to root your phone - you can't do without it.

The last section of the upper settings.

Specific Accounts moved to the top section - so it is more convenient to configure them. The "Movements" section - very flexible settings.

S Pen settings.

Accessories.

Special abilities.

Applications V smartphones Samsung some basic Android apps replaced by their own - and this is very good. For example, the telephone section is much more convenient than the basic one. Telephone

Swiping a contact to the right will initiate a phone call. If you swipe to the left, you will start writing an SMS to him.

Menu that appears when you call.

Posts A lot has been added in the messages section too. The message list menu.

Menu for creating a message.

Configuring the type of messages.

Creation of a postponed message. (A valuable opportunity, by the way.)

By the way, as in the Galaxy S III, if you just hold the phone to your ear when typing SMS, it will immediately start making a voice call to the subscriber. General message settings - SMS, MMS, notifications, and so on.

Keyboard The keyboard is its own, Samsung's. A number of numeric keys have been added to the alphabetic layout - personally, I very much approve of that. Predicting the words being typed works well - including in Russian. But I do not like switching the layout by space (it does not work well), and the fact that in English and Russian a comma can be called only by long pressing on a point, and there, in addition to the comma, there are 13 more characters. However, the comma can be made to the left of the space (to the right of the Sym button) - there is a custom key on which the last selected character from the list is placed by default.

Browser The browser is a standard android. Works well, but I like mobile Google Chrome a lot better. The large display allows you to surf almost fully.

Gallery A new view mode has appeared - a single stream. Outputs all media files without folders. It is very convenient when you need to quickly find something, but you do not remember where this file is.

Folder view mode.

By albums.

Video You can watch videos from the standard gallery, but a special video section is much more convenient. Viewing thumbnails. Moreover, they are also animated - with a preview.

Folder selection.

Selection by the list of files.

Playback.

A very convenient application in terms of selecting videos and viewing, just great done. Music Also a good own app from Samsung. Convenient selection and playback. With a poor standard android - do not compare.

Well, and the traditional musical square, which distributes the listened music by style.

mail I did not notice any innovations here.

Cards Working with maps on such a display is a pleasure. Moreover, maps from Google for Android are much better than for iOS (Google simply does not provide a version for Apple with all the capabilities). Some three-dimensional buildings are worth something.

Navigation Google navigation is still heavily indebted. It simply cannot be compared with normal navigation programs (Sygic, Navigon). Well, plus it requires a constant connection to the Internet. S-Pen The main difference between the Galaxy Note series and the Galaxy S series is the presence of the S-Pen stylus, and this S-Pen is a very advanced device, and the Galaxy Note and its software Greatly "sharpened" for working with it. As soon as you pull out the S-Pen, the recommended links for working with the stylus appear in the notification area, and the contextual desktop S-Pen appears on the desktop.

Create S Note - you can write, draw and so on.

Storing notes and S Note templates.

Working with the S Note template.

When you add, for example, a calendar entry, the handwriting recognition mode is activated.

You can also draw and attach pictures - in the calendar, messages, and so on.

Another interesting feature is the so-called quick commands. In a special application, put an icon - search, weather, maps, mail, and so on, and then write the appropriate word.

Show Barcelona on the map

As soon as you take off the stylus from the screen, the command execution starts right there.

Well, here is Barcelona on the map.

Paper Artist app. You can draw pictures, process pictures, and so on.

Also, many Samsung applications react to the stylus - for example, if you simply bring the stylus to the preview while viewing images in the gallery, it will increase. This is called Air View - viewing an enlarged image or the appearance of some prompts when you bring the stylus to the screen.

When you call, you can also call S Note, sketch something, write down and save.

Any sections of text and images can be cut out with a stylus, after which a list of applications appears in which this picture can be used - for example, save as a note or send by e-mail.

You can take handwritten notes and drawings right on top of S Planner. By the way, an extremely cool opportunity!

Moreover, drawing parameters and tools are very flexible.

Well, you can also make handwritten annotations to images in the gallery.

I can say that the S-Pen amazed me with its capabilities. I don’t know how to write or draw with my hands, but many users will find this functionality very, very useful. Lock screen The lock screen has become more informative. A lot of things can be displayed on it, including news (not available for Russia), weather and two types of time for roaming.

Also, missed messages and calls are displayed on this screen so that you can immediately go to the corresponding application. Well, the four icons at the bottom allow you to go to the desired application, it's a pity that they cannot be edited.

Camera Now about the work of the camera. The camera worked very well with the first Note (unlike the Galaxy S III). This one is at least no worse. There are, of course, some mistakes, but in general, it shoots, in my opinion, excellent - of course, for a phone. Here is the camera interface.

Settings.

I just didn't like it when they focused here. Previously, after pressing the shutter, focusing was performed in a rectangle in the middle of the frame, after which the frame was taken. Now, when you hover the camera, focusing is immediately performed, after which the rectangle disappears. However, if you move the camera, the rectangle will reappear and focusing will be done again. As it should, I drove the camera in different modes. Basically, everything is very good - the camera is not worse than in the Galaxy Note, and even better. However, judge for yourself. Below are shots taken in a wide variety of conditions - very poor lighting, cloudy weather, sunny weather, evening, street, room - in general, the impressions are very good. It rarely misses the mark with white balance (for several days of shooting - three or four times), focusing works well. "Shavelenka" sometimes comes across, but this is not a camera problem - the shutter speed is not too long and at the same time, the hand probably trembled. Yes, the old well-known Samsung effect, when a noticeable pinkish spot is observed in the center of the frame when shooting a light uniform surface, is also present here. Here are a few frames without any processing - I just reduced them. EXIF is preserved for all. All photos are clickable. Very poor lighting. Filmed decently, but the "noise" is noticeable.
Illuminated first floor with dark stairs.

Here the machine messed up with both exposure and balance.
Overcast weather.

City in cloudy weather.
It was quite dusk - the lanterns were lit.
Evening clouds.
Artificial lighting.
And this is in good weather.

Sunset.
Video shooting interface.
And here's a video filmed on camera. The video also shoots very, very decently. Performance Well, in general, it was expected that with such serious characteristics, the smartphone would just fly. He flies - he did not notice the brakes anywhere, everything works smoothly and quickly. I ran tests on Quadrant Pro - it gave out as many as 6583 units. The Galaxy S III had 4059. The old Note had 3680.

Battery life That was very interesting to find out! The old Note battery lived, in general, decent for such a display. Here the battery is of a very decent capacity, well, purely practically tests have shown that it has a noticeable effect on the battery life. I conducted several tests on a comfortable display brightness mode - this is about 60% ... At the same time, the phone was already rooted and the Juice Defender program was installed, but this should not have affected the results, because when all wireless networks were turned off - Juice Defender, in fact, there was nothing to turn off, and when they were turned on - they were also not turned off by this program , because they were constantly involved with the display turned on. So what I did for all natural (not theoretical) tests. Reading mode All wireless networks are disabled, the usual comfortable display brightness (60%), pages are automatically scrolled in the Cool Reader program. Exactly 11 o'clock! Watching a video Wireless networks are disabled, the usual comfortable display brightness, in the MX Player Pro program, a TV-resolution series with hardware decoding is spinning in a loop. 10 hours 30 minutes. Internet Wi-Fi is on, brightness is comfortable, the site is loaded in the browser, which reloads once a minute. Also about 10 hours 30 minutes. Navigation Navigon is on, GPS is working, normal brightness. 9 hours 30 minutes. This is very cool, I remember well how HTC HD2 with navigation did not last more than two hours. In general, in my opinion, the battery life is very decent. The display has become larger, and the operating time has not decreased, but it has clearly increased. In the usual mode of operation - phone, reading, Internet, video, music, and so on - the phone quite calmly survives until the evening. A couple of times he lived with me for two days - however, at the end of the second day he was completely exhausted. From his adapter, from almost complete discharge to 100%, the phone charges in a couple of hours. From a computer USB adapter - one and a half to two times longer. Price In Europe, this model costs about 530 € (for this price I bought it in "Mediamarkt"). In Russia, the average price for Note II is still at the level of 25-30 thousand rubles (611-734 €). By the way, prices for the first Note have not dropped much yet. Impressions of use and conclusions I only have this smartphone for a few days. At the moment I can say that I really liked it. I switched from Galaxy Note to Galaxy S III, but now I am definitely moving from Galaxy S III to Galaxy Note II - this is exactly what you need. It is clearly more comfortable in the hand than the Galaxy Note, the size is not annoying, and such a display allows you to completely abandon the tablet, especially since I still use a laptop for large tasks. This Note model is, in my opinion, very successful. Samsung has not just slightly changed something in order to force users to update only because it is "so necessary", but have really brought their flagship to the optimal level of both the size and capabilities of the device, and its filling.

A large display diagonal, a powerful processor, an impressive amount of memory and a sufficiently capacious battery - all this is in Note 2. The characteristics of its hardware and software components will be given within the framework of this material.

Set

This device is positioned by the manufacturer itself as a premium gadget. Accordingly, it must have proper equipment. But all the same, there are certain remarks to it. In addition to the mobile device itself, the boxed version of the device includes the following components and accessories: battery, interface wire for connecting to a personal computer, Charger, stylus and instruction manual. This list clearly lacks headphones, a protective film, a case and a memory card. In the first case, there is even a corresponding port, but there is no stereo headset in the package. Although the front panel of the device is protected by 2nd generation Gorilla Eye glass, an additional film to preserve its original state would clearly not be superfluous. The situation is similar with the sides and the back cover - they are also best protected, but only with the help of a cover. Although the capacity of the built-in storage is an impressive 16 GB, you can expand it by installing an external flash card. This will make it possible to more efficiently use the memory subsystem in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics (the instruction indicates this nuance) of the external storage are as follows: the type of micro-SD card, and its maximum capacity is 32 GB. This will definitely be enough to place the user's personal files (photos, videos, books, music) here.

Design

Typical Note 2 design, like a Galaxy device. Most of the front panel is occupied by the display. In this case, its diagonal is 5.55 inches. Above it there is a spoken speaker and "windows" of sensors. Below, strictly in the middle, is the main mechanical key for returning to the main desktop. Along the edges of it are touch keys "Back" and "Menu". As noted earlier, the front panel is fully protected by the Gorilla Eye glass in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The manufacturer's specs indicate that it is second generation. On the right edge there is a button for locking the device, and on the left there is a swing for adjusting the volume of the gadget. A micro-USB port is located on the back of the smart phone. There is also a hole for storing the stylus. And on the top edge there is a 3.5 mm audio port. On the back cover smartphone, in addition to the manufacturer's logo, there is also a hole for the main camera with illumination based on one LED and a loud speaker.

Computing heart of the gadget

A very powerful processor solution is used in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics of the Exynos 4412 are as follows: 4 computing modules based on the "A9" architecture, which can accelerate to 1.6 GHz at maximum load. Its semiconductor crystal was made according to the 32 nm technological process, and the maximum level of its power consumption can reach 4 W. This is Samsung's own development and it was this chip that was used in the flagship device of 2012 - the Galaxy S3. And although by the standards of the mobile gadgets industry 3 years is an impressive period, even now this processor can cope with almost any task. For example, the same "Asphalt 8" will run on this device, even if not at maximum settings. For the rest of the tasks (viewing Internet portals, playing videos, listening to music), the level of its performance is excessive, and it will cope with them without problems.

Display and graphics solution

One of the main features of the device is the display diagonal, which, as mentioned earlier, is an impressive 5.55 inches. It is made using the SuperAMOLED technology. Color reproduction, contrast and brightness are at an acceptable level. The second important component of the graphics subsystem is the Mali-400MP4 video accelerator in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics (thanks to them, the phone can solve most tasks today) of this adapter are really impressive. Its computational performance is 15.8 GFLOPS with a chip operating frequency of 440 MHz.

Cameras: what they can do

Two high-quality cameras are installed in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The specifications and photos of the main one are really impressive. She has an 8 megapixel sensor element. At the same time, there is an autofocus system and LED backlight. Also, at the software level, a face recognition algorithm is implemented. As a result, the quality of the photos taken with the main camera of this device raises no objections. The video on it is recorded as "1080 r". There are no questions about the quality of her videos either: the color rendition is excellent, the picture is legible. The front camera is based on a more modest sensor element of 1.9 megapixels. To obtain high-quality images, this is clearly not enough at the moment. But for "selfies" and video calls this is quite enough, and it is for these tasks that it is intended.

Device memory

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 boasts a well-organized memory subsystem. The amount of RAM installed in it is 2 GB. The integrated internal storage is 16 GB. At the same time, the user can use only 11 GB to install his programs and store. This is quite enough for comfortable and normal work. The rest of the space is occupied by the system software. If the 11 GB of free space of the internal storage is not enough for the user, you can install an external flash card with 32 GB. The corresponding slot is in this device. This will certainly solve the problem of lack of free space in the device. Well, the most valuable information is best stored on some cloud service. This will allow you to restore it in the event of a breakdown or theft of the device without any problems.

Autonomy

The dimensions of the device are impressive (one display diagonal is only 5.55 inches) and with a small battery, it could not boast an impressive degree of autonomy. As a result, the battery capacity is 3100 mAh in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristic, of course, is far from outstanding today. But this value is quite enough for the device to last 2-3 days with an average load on one battery charge. Taking into account the diagonal of the screen of the device and the hardware filling, it will not be possible to significantly increase this value. If you run some resource-intensive application (for example, "Asphalt 8"), then the battery life will be reduced to 6-8 hours.

Data exchange

An impressive list of ways to exchange data with the outside world is implemented in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics in this regard are as follows:

  • Supports GSM and 3G mobile networks. However, the device has only one slot for installing a SIM card, and it cannot work in the "DUOS" mode. In the first case, it will only be possible to browse simple sites on the Internet and exchange messages on social networks. But with the help of 3G technology, all these restrictions are removed, it will even be possible to watch online videos.
  • The Korean developers have not forgotten about "Bluetooth" either. It is indispensable when you need to connect wireless headphones to a smartphone or exchange small personal files with a similar mobile device.
  • The device also has a "Wi-Fi" module. Just like 3G, it allows you to receive and send data to the global web in any quantity and at a good speed. In this case, the most "heavy" sites will load quickly enough.
  • There are two systems for navigation in the device. One of them is tied to satellites and can work with both JPS and GLONASS. Well, the second is based on the use of the location of the towers mobile communications and is called A-JPS.
  • Among the wired interfaces, the presence of the previously mentioned micro-USB and audio port can be distinguished. The first is for charging the battery or connecting to a PC. The second is used in cases when you need to output to an external speaker system.

System software

The software base is "Android" in Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100. The characteristic of the system software component indicates version 4.1. Additionally, on top of the system software, a proprietary "TouchViz" shell is installed. With its help, you can easily and simply customize the smartphone software interface to suit your needs. The smoothness and reliability of the system software raises no objections.

Applied software

A typical set of pre-installed software is in the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics (reviews indicate this) allow much more software to be pre-installed on it. The programmers on it installed a standard set of mini-applications from Google in advance, clients social networks and operating system firmware. The rest will have to be downloaded from the app store by the owner of the device. But, on the other hand, you can more accurately customize the device to fit your needs.

User opinion

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 N7100 is a premium device. Hence the increased requirements for it, which is completely a gadget. He has no weaknesses. Certain remarks are caused only by the equipment of the device. But, on the other hand, the owner of such an expensive device can definitely afford to separately purchase a cover, a protective film and an external drive. Moreover, to choose any of these accessories is exactly what he really needs. This smartphone has no more flaws.

Outcomes

Although this gadget was released in 2012, any modern software is within the power of Samsung Galaxy Note 2. The characteristics of its hardware and software components indicate this. At the same time, the price of this phone dropped to $ 200. This is an impeccable ratio of price, performance and quality.
