Positioning

This spring, Samsung introduced three new relatively inexpensive models based on the Android operating system: Ace, Gio and Fit. The first two have a processor with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a screen resolution of 320x480 pixels. However, the Ace has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera module and a large 3.5” display. Samsung Fit boasts the same camera as the Ace, but its processor has a frequency of only 600 MHz, and the resolution is less than the minimum standard for Androids - 240x320 pixels. The price difference between Gio and Fit is small, but in my opinion, the latter is more elegant.

In this review, we will consider a balanced "average" - Samsung Gio.

Design, dimensions, controls

The phone has small dimensions (110x57x12 mm) and weight (102 g). The front side is made of translucent black plastic, the sides are light gray, the edging around the perimeter is glossy, back cover Made of corrugated plastic in dark gray. The shape of the body is streamlined, the materials from which the device is made are non-slip and pleasant to the touch, so the Galaxy Gio fits perfectly in the hand. And although the screen is quickly covered with fingerprints, in general, the surface is completely unmarked.

The assembly of the device is ideal due to the large number of fasteners on the back cover: it does not play, does not creak, does not crunch when squeezed in the hand, and the central region does not push through.

The speech speaker and proximity sensor are located at the top of the front panel. The speaker has an average volume, there is practically no margin, but the interlocutor is heard legibly. Under the screen are two touch keys: call the context menu and "back". They are illuminated by bright white LEDs. Between them - a large mechanical button "home" in the form of a rectangle with smooth edges. It is almost recessed into the body, its movement is minimal, the pressing is soft, there is a characteristic “click” sound.

On the left side there is a thin, flat and slightly raised volume rocker key. Just above it is the hole for attaching the strap. On the right side there is a microSD slot with a plastic cover and a small on/off button. Above is a standard 3.5 mm jack for connecting headphones or a headset, below is a microUSB connector and a microphone.

On the back side there is a camera lens and two slots where the speaker is hidden.

Display

Unlike the Galaxy Fit, which, oddly enough (given the lower resolution), has a 3.3" display, the Gio has a 3.2"" display (physical size 68x45 mm). Resolution 320x480 pixels, matrix type - TFT-LCD, displays 16.7 million shades of color, the sensor is made using capacitive technology, supports up to two simultaneous touches ("multi-touch"). The sensitivity is average, there were often misses, that is, the screen did not respond to light touches.

The viewing angles are large, the contrast drops slightly when tilted, but the colors are not distorted. The brightness is high, it can only be adjusted manually, since there is no light sensor in the phone. The proximity sensor is responsible for turning off the backlight during a call, it works correctly and turns off the backlight in time. Also in the device there is a three-axis accelerometer MBA220, a linear acceleration sensor and a rotation sensor.

In the sun, the screen fades completely.

Battery

IN samsung galaxy The S5660 uses a 1350 mAh lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery. Model EB494358VU. Exactly the same is in Galaxy Ace and Fit. The manufacturer claims that in standby mode Galaxy Gio will "live" up to 610 hours (2G) and up to 460 hours 3G network. Talk time is up to 10 hours (2G) and up to 6 hours in 3G network.

If you use the phone for about 10 hours, the battery will be completely discharged, provided: 20-30 minutes of calls per day, 3 hours of using Wi-Fi Internet (Twitter, mail, downloading applications and installing them), about three hours mobile internet, a couple of hours of listening to music. Longer work can only be achieved by less load on the smartphone.

From USB it charges about two and a half hours, from the network - about 1.5.

Communication options

The phone works in cellular networks 2G (850/900/1800/1900) and 3G (900/2100). HSDPA speed - up to 7.2 Mbps. Available with Bluetooth version 2.1 (with A2DP stereo profile) for file and voice transfer. There were no problems with connecting headsets: it connects quickly, speech is transmitted clearly.

There is a wireless connection Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n. The device can be used as an access point (Wi-Fi Hotspot). In the "settings" there is a special item. During the work, the network did not “fall”.

USB 2.0 is used for file transfer and data synchronization. When connecting the Gio to a PC, it is identified as a USB flash drive or USB tethering.

Memory and memory card

Gio has 280 MB random access memory which is sufficient for most tasks. 160 MB of Flash-memory is allocated for installing applications (about 120 MB is free). If desired, all applications are transferred to microSD, a two-gigabyte memory card is included in the package.

Camera

The Galaxy Ace and Fit have 5MP cameras, while the Gio has only 3MP (3.15MP to be precise). There is autofocus, the speed of which is not amazing: it takes about 3 seconds for the camera to focus on the object. The maximum photo resolution is up to 2048x1536 pixels. I liked their quality: natural colors, a clear picture and a wide viewing angle. The only disappointment was the lack of a mechanical button on the side of the phone to activate the shutter.

Videos are recorded in 320x240 resolution at 15 frames per second. There is no point in talking about the quality of the video - it is unimportant.

The camera is launched through the menu using a shortcut. The interface is as follows: on the left - shooting mode (single shot, smile detection, continuous, panorama), scenes (landscape, night, sports, indoor, beach, sunset, etc.), brightness adjustment, settings. On the right is the gallery, switching from photo to video.

Photo settings:

  • Focus mode (autofocus, macro)
  • Timer
  • Resolution (320x240, 1280x960, 1600x1200, 2048x1536)
  • Measurement (center-weighted, spot metering, matrix)
  • Quality (normal, excellent, best)

Video mode interface: left - recording mode (normal, for MMS), brightness, settings; on the right - switching from video to photo, entering the gallery.

Video settings:

  • Timer
  • Resolution (176x144, 320x240)
  • White balance (auto, daylight, cloudy, incandescent)
  • Effects (no effects, negative, black and white, sepia)
  • Adjust (contrast, saturation, sharpness)

The photo album looks familiar. Almost all Android devices have a 3D gallery installed:

You can get full EXIF information from a photo file:

Video Features:

  • Video Codec: MPEG-4 Visual, 480 Kbps
  • Resolution: 320 x 240, 15 fps
  • Audio Codec: AAC at 62 Kbps
  • Channels: 1 channel, 48.0 kHz

Performance

All three models (Ace, Gio and Fit) use the same Qualacomm MSM7227 chipset. However, the Ace and Gio processors were overclocked from 600 to 800 MHz. However, its architecture (ARMv6) has not changed. Adreno 200 with support for OpenGL ES-CM 1.1 is used as a 3D accelerator. That is, you can play simple games, for example, Angry Birds, but you should not count on something more.

The same chipset is used ZTE Skate, HTC ChaCha, HTC Wilfire S and others. In terms of speed, the S5660 is not inferior to the above smartphones. During testing, there were no abnormal situations: reboots, freezes, OS glitches, slowdowns, etc. I would say so - it works "exactly".

System Information:

Navigation

The smartphone has a GPS navigator. Its functionality is the same as in most inexpensive phones. "Cold" start - about 50 seconds, "hot" - up to 6-8 seconds.

Software platform

Gio works for android version 2.3.3. However, for such a segment of budget mobile phones, this is not critical, since 2.3.4 and 2.3.5 will not play any role.

Shell and menu

The familiar TouchWIZ 3.0 shell is present here. There is no point in describing it in detail. But in short: three desktops with widgets, a panel with a “dialer”, “contacts”, “messages” and an entrance to the “menu”. To unlock the screen, you must press the "menu" button or the device's power button and then swipe your finger across the screen from left to right. You can assign to desktops: shortcuts, folders, hotkeys and various widgets. As wallpaper, static and animated screensavers are used. When you hold the mechanical home button for a long time, a menu appears with previously launched applications. There is also a task manager.

The menu is represented by 16 icons in a 3x4 grid on one screen. By clicking on the "menu" and selecting "change" in it, the shortcuts can be moved. Including, install them in the bottom panel (“home” cannot be replaced).

Challenges

Standard for Samsung phones dialer: large, comfortable and functional. It is easy to get into contacts and call log from it. When dialing a number, a list of contacts starting with these numbers appears in the input field window. To create a contact, you must click on the "plus" in the "contacts". The following information is available for each subscriber: avatar, first and last name, phone number, email address, Google account Talk, group, ringtone, email address, organization, note, nickname, site, birthday and anniversary.

Messages

Two types of keyboard are used for typing: "Samsung", which resembles the keyboard in iOS, and Swype. Both seemed to me not very convenient due to the small screen size. In this case, I am an adherent of the resistive type of sensor, since in this case you can at least hit the buttons with a stylus. The phone has an accelerometer, so when you turn the smartphone on its side, the keyboard takes on a landscape look, and it is more convenient to enter text.

Applications

To install programs and games, Galaxy Gio has Android Market, and below is a list of those applications that are already downloaded to the phone's memory:

Clock. The screen displays the time, date and weather information. From this screen, you can switch to an album with photos, music, and set an alarm.

Calendar.

Notes.

AllShare. A program for transferring images or music to multimedia devices that support DLNA.

Internet. Regular internet browser.

Market. App Store from Google.

gmail. Mail client from Google.

Email. Mail client for various mail services.

Search.

Cards. Google Maps for navigation.

Social Hub. This is a comprehensive solution that is integrated as part of the TouchWiz 3.0 shell on top of the operating system of the device. It includes mechanisms for supporting various data feed formats with a special implementation of their feed. The user receives something similar to a phone book, in which you can add not only a phone number, but also social network data (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace), Email or Internet messenger (ICQ, AOL).

YouTube. Client for viewing video from the site youtube.com.

Google Talk. Chat by Google.

Locator.

Navigation.

Addresses.

News and weather.

My files. This is the file manager. Allows you to copy, cut, delete files and packs.

Calculator.

Samsung Apps. App store from Samsung. Some kind of Android Market.

Voice recorder.

Task Manager. View active and downloaded applications. Allows you to clear memory and remove programs.

Books. Allows you to search and buy books directly from your phone.

Music portal. Music search and purchase.

A game"Hanger".

Multimedia

Music player

In the main menu, you can organize songs by artists, albums and songs. When playing a song, the album cover, player control keys, and a button for viewing the list of songs are displayed on the screen. In the settings it is possible to set the sound to 5.1 or select an equalizer. For the latter, 11 presets are available: rock, jazz, classical, dance, pop, live sound, concert hall, wide range, music clarity, bass boost and externalization.

The sound volume of the polyphonic speaker is medium. Reproduces cleanly, without overloads. The sound quality in the headphones is not bad, but far from perfect: there is a lack of deep low frequencies (40-50 Hz).

FM radio

For its operation, you need to connect headphones, they act as an antenna. The sensitivity of the radio receiver is low. Operating range 85 - 108 MHz, RDS supported. Large digits of the current frequency appear on the screen, at the bottom - four cells of frequently listened to radio stations. In the settings, you can set the radio auto-off timer: from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Video player

Very simple player with support for H264/H263 codecs and MP4 and 3GP formats. The maximum resolution of videos is 640x360 pixels with a bit rate of no more than 1200 Kbps in MP4 format. There are no settings, only rewind videos and "play" / "pause".

Web browser

Standard web browser. Does not support Flash 10.x by default because the kernel architecture is ARMv6. You can try to install Adobe Flash, which is optimized for such chips, but the speed of surfing is sharply reduced, and the stability is negatively affected.

Conclusion

In general, Samsung Galaxy Gio made a good impression: ergonomic design, fast menu and application speed, good camera and bright screen. True, he has plenty of competitors ...

The Galaxy Fit is also attractive to the buyer (even a 600 MHz processor can be closed eyes), but the resolution is not enough for a 3.3-inch diagonal - pixelization is visible. If that doesn't scare you, then it's a great option.

However, if you choose between Ace, Gio and Fit, then I would prefer Ace, although it is more expensive (about 10,000 rubles).

By the way, MTS 955 was released in September (the test of the device is available on our website) - an interesting smartphone, given that it has a large 3.5 "" display, a high-quality case, a beautiful and functional shell, loud voice and main speakers. His price is close to the price of "Gio" (about 7,000 rubles).

Still in demand and LG Optimus P500. It costs 1,000-1,500 rubles cheaper than the S5660. In this case, you sacrifice only the frequency of the processor. But, frankly, the difference in speed will be imperceptible, and if desired, it can be overclocked to the same 800 MHz.

So, Galaxy Gio justifies the status of "middling": there are no obvious negative sides, but nothing outstanding either.

Roman Belykh (

The Samsung Galaxy Gio is Samsung's most affordable smartphone to date and takes pride of place in a rich lineup. It was first announced in January 2011. The low price of the device (about $170 at the time of writing) ensured its high popularity both among young people and among fans of budget, high-performance devices. S5660 is equipped with a processor with a frequency of 800 MHz and is controlled by the Android 2.2 operating system. Below are the detailed specifications.

Smartphone appearance, screen

Externally, the device looks like other devices of this line. The same rounded edges and elongated shape. The build quality is 4+, and the plastic used is pretty good quality. On the back panel, you can see a corrugated surface, as well as a camera and a speaker.

Video review of Samsung Galaxy Gio

Iron

Gio has a very good Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor, which runs at 800 MHz by default. This is quite enough to perform the vast majority of tasks, and even allows you to play almost all modern toys. The RAM is 256 MB, which is actually a kind of standard for devices of this class. But the amount of built-in ROM is rather meager, only 158 MB. But this is not a problem at all, since you can buy microSD card up to 32 GB and safely store large volumes of music and movies in your smartphone.

Multimedia and camera

The phone has a 3.2-inch display with a resolution of 320×480 pixels. The camera is equipped with autofocus and is capable of taking pictures at a resolution of 2048×1536, which means it has 3.2 million pixels. Video recording is supported at 15 frames per second. And finally, it is worth mentioning communications. It has everything you need: Wi-fi, Bluetooth, GPS, USB, and 3G. In fact, this is the entire necessary set.

At the start of sales, this device no longer had advanced technical characteristics and was a budget phone built on the Qualcomm QCT MSM7227T platform and running on the Android 2.2.1 Froyo - 2.3.7 Gingerbread operating system.

The date of the announcement of the sale of the smartphone falls on the first quarter of 2011, and it began to be sold in Russia and Europe almost simultaneously.

Samsung Gio was positioned by the manufacturer as a replacement for Nokia touchscreen smartphones running on Symbian 9.4, as well as an alternative to Symbian Anna and communicators running on Symbian 9.4. windows mobile, whose characteristics completely lost to the new state employee, which ultimately allowed him to win his market share.

Samsung Galaxy Gio has successfully outlived its competitors and has not lost its relevance thanks to the efforts of the authors of unofficial firmware, the latest of which is currently Android 4.4.4 (KitKat).

Packing and scope of delivery

Samsung Galaxy Gio was delivered in a small bright box, which contained a delivery kit, which was the accessories necessary to work with a smartphone.

IN standard equipment The model does not have a headset, which is partly compensated by the presence of a 2Gb memory card.

Contents of delivery:

  • Samsung Gio GT-S5660.
  • Battery EB494358VU with a capacity of 1350 mAh.
  • Charger - USB ETA0U10EBECSTD.

  • Memory card 2Gb microSD.
The delivery set is a standard set of budget accessories that are not of high quality, but have successfully worked for 3 years from the date of purchase of the smartphone.

Design and materials

The device is made in two colors designed for different audiences, white (Silver White) and gray-black (Dark Silver).

Samsung GT-S5660 is one of the faceless smartphones of the Galaxy series, completely made in a body made of different-sized plastic.

The build quality of the gadget is at a high level, which is impossible to say about the quality of the materials themselves. The body of the state employee has seriously worn out since the time of purchase.

Using the device without a case entails the rapid appearance of small scratches on the screen and obvious paint coming off on the case.

The only element that resists the rapid loss of presentable appearance, is the back cover of the device, made of corrugated plastic.

The device weighs 102 grams with a body size of 110x57x12 mm, which makes it convenient to use the device with one hand.

Case materials and transparent protective plastic covering the upper part of the case do not collect fingerprints and are easily cleaned with a regular cloth.

The build quality of the Gio GT-S5660 is not satisfactory. On the front panel of the device there are two touch and one mechanical key that perform the functions of “call the context menu of applications”, “back” and “home”.

On the left, at the end of the device, there is a volume rocker and a place for attaching a strap.

On the right is the micro-SD memory card slot and the power button.

At the top of the device there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, at the bottom there is a microphone hole and a micro-USB connector.

Software

The smartphone initially runs on the Android 2.2.1 Froyo operating system, but its official update to version 2.3.7 Gingerbread is supported.

Unofficial firmware allow you to install Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) on this gadget. The device is based on the Qualcomm QCT MSM7227T chipset with a core clock of 800 MHz.

  • Triaxial accelerometer MBA220.
The technical part allows you to run “light” games on your phone and almost everything available for this device, software.

Screen

The Samsung Galaxy Gio display has a real physical size of 68x45 mm with a TFT-LCD matrix resolution of 320x480 pixels.

The screen transmits up to 16.7 million colors and has low readability in the sun, as well as relatively small viewing angles. The multi-touch display supports two simultaneous touches.

cameras

A budget camera module with autofocus capability and a resolution of 3.15 MP allow you to take pictures up to 2048x1536 pixels. Video recording is implemented in a resolution of 320x240 pixels and is mediocre.

The device does not have a camera button, so the shooting takes place exclusively through the phone software. The Galaxy Gio camera is suitable for photographing documents and ordinary photos in good lighting conditions.

Sound, player, radio

The device does not use the loudest speaker, but it allows you to listen to music in proper quality.

Using a 3.5 mm jack to connect a headset or headphones solves this problem. The smartphone has Internet and FM radio, which allows you to listen to both online and analog radio stations.

Samsung Galaxy Gio does not belong to the class of multimedia combines, so its multimedia capabilities correspond to the budget class of devices.

This problem is partially solved through the use of third-party players and high-quality vacuum headphones.

Battery

The EB494358VU battery with a capacity of 1350 mAh used in the smartphone allows you to freely use the device during the day.

In everyday use, the device showed acceptable autonomy, which can vary greatly due to the installed software and version of the operating system.

Internet

The Internet capabilities of the smartphone are well developed and allow you to fully use the device for Internet surfing, correspondence in in social networks and watching streaming video in low resolution.

Conclusion

A budget phone, a phone, as its main features in the world of modern smartphones push the Galaxy Gio into the category additional devices.

The use of this device as the main smartphone is difficult due to its low hardware qualities.

The device is suitable for schoolchildren, students and other people who do not require their device to follow the trend of increasing MHz (s) and screen resolution.

Due to the large number of users this phone custom firmware for it is still being released, which makes the device relevant in the form of a second device to this day.

    Cheapness; I don't remember anymore

simple convenient phone from its class for the money

The model is adequate for its price. Quick response of the sensor, the programs do not slow down, the network catches perfectly, the battery holds decently. No frills design - everything you need in the kit. The pipe is not for 3D games, for a more serious person. Android is an indisputable advantage, I won’t spread it, everything is clear here.

Pleasant appearance, Build quality (does not creak or play), Compact size, Pleasant display for the eyes.

Normal phone. Stylish design, music sounds loud. The price is excellent. Bought in 2012. For 9000. Wi-fi catches perfectly. Fits in the hand. This is not a samsung galaxy s 4.

Reliable, has been working for 3 YEARS!!! Reliable case, fell a lot of times on the asphalt, as a result I have a few small scratches.

Stylish design, attractive price. Bright display. This is where the pluses end.

It seems to me that the main advantage is the stuffing that you get for that kind of money! In terms of components, the phone is close to the Galaxy Ace, but the price is very different;). Assembled soundly, without annoying backlashes. The materials create a pleasant impression, the mechanical buttons work clearly ... The sensor is generally worthy of separate praise - I have not seen such responsiveness in the budget price category. The screen is clear in almost any lighting conditions, the pixelation is not as hurtful to the eye as on 240x320 displays. The virtual keyboard is convenient even with male fingers, it seems to know exactly where it wanted to press even if it missed a bit :) The organizer, like in all Android devices, is very good and convenient. Slim and stylish design - here Samsung is on top as always. For those who want to have a chemo

Sometimes buggy (rarely), little internal memory

    Permanent screenshots on their own;
    - at the beginning of the call for some time (~20 sec) the voice is encoded incorrectly: only some kind of iron sound is heard without parsing words;
    - the phone very often turns on the phone during a conversation. Yes, yes, it turns on: you talk and silence. you look at the screen, and the phone turns on!
    - the battery in high activity mode holds a charge from 100% to shutdown for about 2.5 hours. Charged in the morning, came to work, 1-1.5 hours of talking, and the phone turned off!

sometimes the sensor does not respond to pressing

The screen fades in the sun to the point that almost nothing is visible.
It takes a very long time to come to my senses after flying on an airplane (it takes a long time to look for a roaming network - up to 20 minutes)

I can’t say well about the battery. It discharges really quickly. It’s an android. It slows down terribly!!! Many games don’t load! The camera is ordinary. The cover scratches quickly! it is white. It would be better if I bought black))) You know, it quickly gets dirty.

Still 180 mb internal memory it will not be enough, especially applications such as facebook that eat up about 20 MB of memory are especially annoying, with a basic set of programs (which are written to the phone’s memory and not on SD), the memory often ends, you have to clear the cache, therefore sometimes some programs cannot be updated, such like google maps, skype, etc. It also happens that there is not enough RAM, it starts to dull, it is treated simply by resetting the memory in the task manager.

    1. Periodically loses the network. I still don’t fully understand: the reason is in the device or perhaps in the operator, although the old Samsung worked much more stable.
    2. Brakes ... I already suspect that I installed some kind of unsuccessful application, which in the background eats resources so much that sometimes the response reaches several seconds after pressing the button, this is very infuriating.
    3. Sometimes you can't write a message, you have to minimize the window, and then go back in.
    4. The battery would be a little more powerful.

It discharges VERY quickly, it can last a maximum of a day. But this is the case with most phones these days.
-Android platform - for someone it may be a plus, but for me a phone on such a platform turned out to be very difficult to master.
-Touch keyboard. The virtual keys are so small it's nearly impossible to text on the go
-Sometimes the phone seems to live its own life: if you want to set an alarm, it goes into notes, if you want to make a call, it opens the SMS message window. The back button sometimes transforms into a screen capture function. Infuriates!

Due to the fact that the case is quite thin - the protective touch "glass" (more precisely, plastic) is very close to the display, consequently, excessive pressing on it can irreparably damage the display itself (although over time you get used to the sensitive sensor and stop pressing hard :)). The battery could be stronger, 2 days at an average load and that's it (buying a reinforced one saves the situation). The video shoots 320x240, I really hope that they will fix this defect with the new firmware.

    1) The sensor is very sensitive. After some time, it starts to fail and flip through the pages in the book or turn on applications (it was the sensor glitch that did not find any viruses)
    2) The kernel version is prehistoric, so you can not hope that you will run good games and you will not need the power that is admired by talking about Gio.
    3) A small amount of built-in memory, only on which applications are installed. To install on a memory card, you need to get root rights, so if you need a gaming phone, then save money and buy a more powerful android device.
    4) It often lags, let the one who says nefig take the cheap stuff, it’s not clear where it’s taken from, I’ll say right away - I bought it in an elite salon in the city center, the one who says that this phone is super duper doesn’t know anything about it, or doesn’t
