Accidentally deleted photos. Learn how to recover deleted photos on your phone yourself

Sometimes on Android smartphones you may encounter a problem: open "Gallery", but all the images from it are gone. We want to tell you what to do in such cases.

The reasons for this failure can be divided into two groups: software and hardware. The first one is cache corruption. "Galleries", the action of malicious applications, violation of the file system of the memory card or internal storage. The second is damage to memory devices.

The first thing to find out is whether there are photos on the memory card or internal storage. To do this, you need to connect either a memory card to the computer (for example, through a special card reader), or a phone if images from the built-in storage have disappeared. If the photos are recognized on the computer, then you are most likely faced with software failure. If there are no pictures or there were problems during the connection (for example, Windows suggests formatting the drive), then the problem is hardware. Luckily, in most cases, you can get your images back.

Method 1: Clearing the Gallery Cache

By virtue of android features the gallery cache may fail, resulting in photos that are not displayed on the system, although they are recognized and opened when connected to a computer. When faced with this type of problem, do the following:

  1. open "Settings" in any possible way.
  2. Go to general settings and look for the item "Applications" or "Application Manager".
  3. Go to the tab "All" or similar in meaning, and find among the system application "Gallery". Tap on it to go to the details page.
  4. Find the "Cache" mark on the page. Depending on the number of images on the device, the cache can take from 100 MB to 2 GB or more. Click the button "Clear". Then - "Clear Data".
  5. After clearing the gallery cache, return to the general list of applications in the manager and find "Media storage". Go to the properties page of this application, and also clear its cache and data.
  6. Restart your smartphone or tablet.
  7. If the problem was the gallery crashing, then after these steps it will disappear. If it doesn't, read on.

    Method 2: Deleting .nomedia files

Sometimes, due to the actions of viruses or the inattention of the user himself, files with the name .nomedia may appear in directories with photos. This file migrated to Android with the Linux kernel and is service data that does not give file system index media content in the directory where they are located. Simply put, photos (as well as videos and music) from a folder that has a file .nomedia, will not be displayed in the gallery. To return the photos to their place, this file must be deleted. This can be done, for example, using Total Commander.

    1. After installing Total Commander, enter the application. Call up the menu by pressing the three dots or the corresponding key. In the pop-up menu, tap on " Settings…”.
    2. In the settings, check the box next to the item "Hidden files/folders".
    3. Then visit the photo folder. Typically, this is a directory named DCIM.
    4. The specific folder with photos depends on many factors: firmware, Android version, the camera used, etc. But as a rule, photos are stored in directories with names "100 ANDRO", Camera or right in DCIM.
    5. Let's say the photos disappeared from the folder Camera. We go into it. Total Commander's algorithms place system and service files above all others in a directory on standard display, so that the presence of .nomedia can be noticed immediately.

Click and hold on it to bring up the context menu. To delete a file, select "Delete".

      Confirm deletion.
    6. Also check other folders that may contain photos (for example, the download directory, messenger folders or social network clients). If they also have .nomedia, remove it as described in the previous step.
    7. Restart your device.

After reboot go to "Gallery" and check if the photos are restored. If nothing has changed, read on.

    Method 3: Photo Recovery

If Methods 1 and 2 did not help you, we can conclude that the essence of the problem lies in the drive itself. Regardless of the reasons for its appearance, it will no longer be possible to do without file recovery. The details of the procedure are described in the article below, so we will not dwell on them in detail.

    Conclusion

As you can see, the loss of photos from "Galleries" there is no reason to panic at all: in most cases, they can be returned.

What is Android Data Recovery

No matter what brand of device we use, most likely we also use a memory card. When you delete any information, the files do not disappear completely, but are only replaced by new data.

Until the pictures are completely gone from the smartphone, you can try to restore them. For this, it is recommended to use special software.

  • A program called Android Data Recovery will help us recover a wide variety of data, including contacts, messages, videos, and photos.
  • A convenient feature of the application is the function of image preview before restoration, which significantly speeds up the search. In addition, when you restore a picture, its original quality is preserved.
  • You can download the program for free from the Internet. There is support for all Android devices. The program works on both Mac and Windows.
  • It will help you recover files internal memory, and from any media, including memory cards and mini-disks.

This program supports a number of image formats, including JPEG, JPG, TIF, and so on. In addition, it works with all brands of mobile devices and on all versions of Windows.
  1. We connect the smartphone to the PC using a USB cable, and wait until the computer recognizes it.

  3. For example, if we have version 2 and earlier, go to "Applications" through the settings.
  4. Select the "Development" item and mark the debugging item.
  5. In versions 3 or 4.1, debugging is enabled in the “For Developers” item, and in 4.2, you first need to go to the “About phone” item and press the build number several times in a row until we get to the mode we need.
  6. After that, also select the "For Developers" menu.
  7. Enabling debugging will help us perform a subsequent scan of remote information. We press "Start". After a while, click "Allow" and again - the "Start" button.
  8. Upon completion of the scanning procedure, the deleted files should be displayed. There will also be photographs among them.
  9. At this stage, it is recommended to use the preview function. Select the desired pictures and click "Recovery", after which we save the files to the PC.

I will answer your questions: why photos are not displayed in the Android gallery (the phone does not show photos) or photos open in low quality. What should I do if the images are not saved in the Gallery? The answers are posted below.

3 Apps to Restore Photos from Android Gallery

Among photo recovery programs, we note three free tools: DiskDigger, Recuva, PhotoRec.

These programs will be useful if photos from the Gallery have been deleted, damaged or lost as a result of unsuccessful file copying:

  • from the internal memory of the phone to the sd card;
  • from phone to computer.

We advise you to test the above programs with the option of deep checking. The programs are installed on the PC. Gallery photos should be saved to HDD, not the sd card, otherwise deleted files will be overwritten and the chances of recovery will be significantly reduced.

Change where photos are stored

Many Android users install a new memory card in their phone and are surprised to find that the photos and videos they take are still saved to the phone's memory.

You can easily change the storage location for your photos. For this:

  • Go to Camera Settings
  • Locate the Storage Location option
  • Change it to SD card.

Free your memory card from unnecessary files

If the captured photos are not saved to the memory card, but to the phone (although the SD card is indicated in the settings), most likely there is simply not enough space on the memory card and Android uses the phone's memory as a spare.

To fix the situation, check the free disk space: Settings - Optimization - Memory.

Remove if necessary junk files on the phone. You can do this:

  • through the Optimization section
  • using utilities CCleaner, CleanMaster for Android
  • manually, through any file manager.

Format the memory card and check it for read errors

Another known issue is that photos do not display correctly / periodically disappear from the Gallery. The reason is reading errors on the memory card.

Solving the problem is quite simple:

  1. Format your memory card
  2. You can check the disk for errors using the chkdsk utility.

Where are Gallery photos stored?

Remember the name of the folder - DCIM (Digital Camera IMages).

All photos taken with the camera are stored in the Camera directory on the memory card or phone. For organizational convenience, you can create other folders inside DCIM.

Note. The DCIM (and subfolders) must not contain files named nomedia (this is a signal for the media scanner to ignore its contents).

If the Android Gallery does not display a photo, check the contents of the DCIM folder via PC:

  • connecting phone to computer via usb cable
  • by connecting the sd card through the card reader.

If photos are found, copy them to a PC, if not, use recovery programs.

Clear Gallery Cache

If Gallery displays gray or black squares instead of thumbnails, clear the cache. Before performing this action, we recommend that you back up the files from DCIM to your hard drive.

The main reasons for deleting photos from the Gallery

1. Format the memory card

Users often forget that formatting a memory card will often delete all files stored on the sd card, including write-protected photos and print orders. Such multimedia data can only be restored using a special software to recover deleted photos.

2. Overwrite and delete photos

Highly common mistake– accidental overwriting of images, photos stored on the camera's memory card with other data. In fact, overwriting a photo is very easy to do by mistake. Therefore, we advise you to check the correctness of the steps several times when you write photos to your computer or to the device's memory card.

3. Damage or breakage of the sd card of the camera

If the memory card is not securely stored, hard drive or flash drives, any storage media, they are at great risk of physical damage if accidentally dropped or directly impacted. We strongly advise you to keep your cameras, sd cards, and flash drives wrapped in thick and soft material that will protect them - and, accordingly, your photos - from shock under any conditions.

Restoring photos from the gallery stored in the internal memory of Android is much more difficult: you need a solid experience. How to do this, I described. If you don't have the skills you need, don't try.

The file manager does not show the memory. If I take new photos, they do not appear in the gallery. And about the screenshots, too, the problem. The device writes "I can't take a screenshot, insufficient memory or permission from the application or organization is missing. I reset the settings. Everything starts working, the photographed images are displayed again, but after a while they disappear from the Gallery again. Tell me what to do if the photos from the gallery are gone?

Answer. The photos are not saved in the internal memory because there is not enough memory on the phone. You need to delete unnecessary files, transfer applications to a memory card, if possible. It is for this reason that the pictures have been removed from the Gallery and are not saved to the internal memory.

1. Accidentally deleted the "Camera" folder from the Gallery instead of a bad photo. As a result, all files were deleted, the phone does not show photos in the gallery. It is impossible to restore them, only those photos that were deleted one by one are restored.

2. I have a Galaxy A3 2016 phone. For several times, the "Camera" folder has disappeared from the phone's memory from the Gallery. I lost a lot of important photos: (I downloaded several programs for recovery, but the ones that deleted themselves do not appear. Please help me get the pictures back!

Answer. If you save files to their original location, you reduce the chances of recovery. Since all the photos were deleted at different times, each of them has its own storage conditions (the files may have been overwritten by others). If you used a memory card for storage, try recovering photos from the Gallery using CardRecovery. If the files were stored in the internal memory of the phone, DiskDigger will help. You need to specify the DCIM folder to scan.

If viewed through a standard file manager, there are no photos in the DCIM folder either. Where does the photo go?

You can do this manually using the CCleaner utility for Android or, for example, the Storage Analyzer application.

Samsung phone A3. Today I wanted to delete a video from the Gallery, selected the ones I needed, pressed the "Delete" button and the phone hung, then clicked on "Exit". Is it possible to somehow restore the photos and videos that were in the Gallery ?!

Answer. If the files have disappeared as a result of a system failure, it is worth checking the memory card for errors. If you have synced Gallery with Google service Photo, look for a copy of the files there.

If the Gallery photos were stored in the internal android memory, the task becomes more difficult. (Read our guide on recovering from internal memory.)
