For the most part, 4K / Ultra HD TVs differ from their predecessors not only in resolution and price. They have HDR support with greater color depth, higher frame rates and a dozen other features.

In this post, we tried to put everything on the shelves and recommend several models in different price segments. And they did it traditionally without reference to our assortment.

Background 4K

The collapse in prices for 4K TVs began three to four years ago, simultaneously with the emergence of 4K content: movies, shows, games. By this time, the massive transition of home Internet networks at a speed of hundreds of megabits per second had successfully arrived, which in fact provided massive access to online cinemas with deposits of 4K interesting things.

Today 4K images have finally lost their exotic status - and not only on the big home screen but even on a smartphone display. Prices for 4K UHD TVs with a diagonal of 43 inches or more, ultra-high quality images are easily transmitted through modern wireless networks, TV shows and films are ready to broadcast on-air, Internet broadcasters and even cellular operators. 4K cameras are not built in, except perhaps in irons.

As is the case with any other electronics, each buyer has their own preferences about the optimal diagonal, the usefulness of a particular function, and even more so about the basic budget, which makes sense to spend on a purchase at all.

We'll go over a list of basic options to consider before purchasing a 4K TV. What to leave on the list - everyone decides for himself. It is possible to cross off from the list, but it is hardly worth ignoring the entire list.

4K, Ultra HD, UHD, UHDTV, 2160p - which one is correct?

Comparison of different screen resolutions

On TVs, the picture has a different size - QuadHD, 3840 x 2160 dots (pixels), or 2160 lines (lines - 2160p). By the way, this is exactly twice as much (both vertically and horizontally) than that of the Full HD standard (1920 x 1080), or four times in area. That is, this is about 8 million pixels versus 2 million for Full HD. The term "4K" is short and capacious, it turned out to be very convenient for advertising, and it stuck.

Ultra HD (Ultra High Definition TV), UHD, UHDTV are all different names for the new "ultra high quality" TV standard versus HDTV (High Definition TV) corresponding to Full HD quality.

Characteristics of TVs

For reference: the basic requirements of the basic Ultra High Definition TV standard (Rec. ITU-R BT.2020) imply that by 2020 UHD TVs (with 4K picture and 8K in the future will support up to 120 frames per second, 10-bit and in the future, even 12-bit color coding (HDR and its further development), as well as spatial sound with up to 24 channels!

Color depth

This provides support for high dynamic range (HDR), displaying a huge number of color gradations - the smallest shades of light tones and shadows in the dark.

HDR

In particular, the Rec. 2100 defines three picture resolutions: 1080p (Full HD), 3840 x 2160 (which we call "4K") and 7680 x 4320 (future "8K"); all three with square pixels and an aspect ratio of 16: 9. List of Supported Rec. 2100 frame rates include 120p, 119.88p, 100p, 60p, 59.94p, 50p, 30p, 29.97p, 25p, 24p, 23.976p. As you can see, we are talking only about progressive scanning (p - progressive), the antediluvian interlaced (i - interlaced) versions have been finally written off.

Rec. 2100 defines a color sampling depth of 10 or 12 bits.

As a practical matter, remember that Rec. 2100 defines exactly the same color space as Rec. 2020. This, in turn, is significantly wider than the sRGB color space, which uses the primary colors of the previous BT.709 standard. It is also worth noting that the wider AdobeRGB gamut, once developed by Adobe based on sRGB to cover the entire printable color gamut of color printers in the CMYK color model, is also a subset of the Rec. 2020/2100.

Nevertheless, a forehead comparison of HDR in cameras, camcorders and TVs is still not entirely appropriate - if only because for working with extended dynamic range during the formation and processing of a video stream, many additional parameters are used to ensure the stability of brightness and color rendition in dynamics. It was these nuances, in particular, that led to the emergence of the new Rec. 2100.

Actually, the key difference between Rec. 2020 and BT.2100 is that the newer version of the standard works with two basic versions of high dynamic range (HDR), defined by different techniques of its formation.

To display High Dynamic Range (HDR) video with brightness levels up to 10,000 nits in Rec. 2020 color space, use Perceptual Quantization (PQ)- industry standard SMPTE ST 2084.

The PQ technique is the basis of the currently popular open formats HDR10 (combination with static metadata for color gamut correction) and HDR10 + (dynamic metadata for frame-by-frame brightness adjustment), as well as the proprietary closed format Dolby Vision (Rec. 2020 color space, but now with 12-bit color depth combined with static and dynamic metadata).

This technique already has widespread support from both TV manufacturers (LG, Samsung) and content producers (Netflix, Amazon). In fact, the new ITU standard does not affect the PQ technique in any way.

4K / Ultra HD HDR logo

Alternative to PQ - HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)- interesting in that due to the hybrid gamma curve (the lower part of the signal values ​​according to the gamma curve, the upper part of the signal values ​​according to the logarithmic curve) it provides compatibility with the image of the standard (SDR) dynamic range. In other words, by combining SDR and HDR picture information in a single signal, HDR TVs with HLG can extract the data they need for high dynamic range, while conventional SDR TVs simply ignore it.

HLG support is not yet comparable in prevalence to the PQ format, although it is incorporated into the DVB standard ATSC 3.0, ITU Rec. 2100, as well as HDMI 2.0b, HEVC, VP9 and H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC specifications. However, a number of content producers and some TV networks (BBC iPlayer, DirecTV, Freeview Play, YouTube) have already announced plans to adapt HLG. TV makers, in turn, are trying to bring HLG support to their existing stock of HDR TVs with a firmware update.

Frame rate, FPS

The first 4K TVs originally had frame rates of less than 60 frames per second. Now, within the framework of the new standards, we are talking about 120 frames per second.

Diagonal

As with conventional TVs, there is no single recipe for choosing a diagonal. Something more appropriate in the kitchen or bedroom, for a home theater in the living room, the choice will be different. You can push off from the criteria for evaluating the "retina" of smartphones: the diagonal in combination with the distance to the screen.

Sound

Perfectionist audiophiles are unlikely to be interested in sound housed inside thin television panels. Nevertheless, today you can find TVs on sale with real wonders of acoustic engineering - they manage to build subwoofers and speakers with ribbon and spatial radiators with excellent sound in panels a few millimeters thick. As a rule, in this case we are talking about premium TVs.

Screen type: OLED, QLED, IPS, TN?

The technology of "quantum dots" (Quantum Dot) - QD LED (QLED in Samsung terminology) are LCD panels with semiconductor nanocrystals glowing under the influence of current or light. Compared to OLED screens, QLED displays are said to have a longer lifespan and are also somewhat more affordable than OLED models today, although they are also in the premium price range.

If we are not talking about the latest OLED and QLED TVs with an exorbitant price tag, manufacturers do not always indicate the type of matrix in a particular TV model: LCD and that's it. In addition, modern algorithms for internal intermediate image processing process the signal quite powerfully. After these "uluchshayers", and even in combination with various types of backlights and their dimming, it is not a fact that you should rely on a particular type of matrix.

That is why, after reading various pros and cons on the Internet, it makes sense to go to the nearest store or demo center and trust your own eyes in the old fashioned way: seeing once is better than stopping hundreds of reviews on the Web, a fact.

Smart TV

First, the TV was connected to a VCR, then digitally to a PC, DVD and flash players. Finally, televisions have learned to go online, independently receive and decode terrestrial, satellite and cable TV channels, record them and provide deferred viewing of programs.

For the owner of a 4K TV, the presence of the Smart TV function means unhindered access to one or another UHD content, and in the case of TVs of some large companies such as LG, Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, also to free collections of 4K films and broadcasts. through direct cooperation of TV and content producers. Moreover, some companies even arrange online movie premieres almost simultaneously with the start of their distribution in cinemas.

You can also always use the services of numerous online cinemas. Some of them now offer 4K content even with HDR support. Finally, you can always buy an external TV box.

But before buying - especially a budget 4K TV, just in case it is worth finding out if it (and what type) has built-in Wi-Fi, a webcam, and whether it is possible to buy these options in our country.
Modern TVs with Smart TVs, as a rule, use the Android platform or the company's own OS, but most of them support the ability to install online services and cinemas. The best ones also support gesture and voice control functions, technology for interacting with mobile devices and mirroring the smartphone screen to the TV screen.

Some companies, such as Samsung, are also making 4K TVs with the ability to add support for new UHD standards without having to replace the entire TV.

Go to the store or buy online?

But the opposite is better - to find the optimal model on the Web (several is better), and pamper yourself with a trip to the store for the "bride". TV in the picture and live, in work - two completely different things. In reality, you may not like the design, remote control, quality - but you never know what.

Having decided on the maximum purchase amount, add at least 20% to it in order to be prepared for surprises, pleasant and not so pleasant. For the sake of fairness, it should also be noted that if you wish, you can find a 4K TV even cheaper - about 25 thousand rubles or even a little less. We are talking about models of such brands as BBK, Daewoo, Haier and others. Here, rather, along with the ratio of price and set (lack) of functions, the factors of brand trust and warranty must also be taken into account.

If you look closely at the most popular models with a diagonal of 50-55 inches, you can find dozens of offers even from top brands at a price of 40-50 thousand rubles. For example, a good 55-inch HDR model - LG 55UJ620V - is on sale for only 42 thousand rubles.

Curiously, this price category also includes interesting models with a curved screen. So, a 49-inch Samsung UE49MU6300U can be found today at a price of only 50 thousand rubles.

1. 4K movies are rarely shot No, they are shot a lot and often. The leaders in this direction were Sony, one of the first to launch mass shooting 4K. And Amazon.

The first films were shot back in 2011. Initially, studios could afford to shoot a dozen films a year. By 2014, the total number of 4K films shot reached 60. Some of the (un) most recent 4K releases include Bad Santa 2, Arrival, Trolls, Passengers, John Wick.

2. Old films look bad on 4K screens Some old films were originally shot with a digital camera. Their resolution is increased only by software, and the quality of the picture suffers greatly from this.

Films shot on film are another matter entirely. They can be digitized to any resolution. And the larger the matrix, the closer in quality it will be to the original. Surely I want to say that no one is doing this. Not at all. The Japanese even converted the iconic "7 Samurai". And for them this is a familiar thing.

Do not forget about the banal upscaling. Of course, it's not as cool as a picture taken with a 4K camera. But much better than 360 or 720 vertical lines.

3. Nowhere to watch: 4K is not broadcast or sold. As you can see, the content is decent. A lot is added by major streaming services - Netflix, for example, filming new items in UltraHD.

Hulu, on the other hand, commissioned a professional manual upscaling of their favorite films. And he started with Bondiana.

The largest American retailer in its Amazon Prime program announced the appearance of 600 fresh and not so films in UltraHD with support for an extended color gamut.

And finally, there is Vidity, a project designed specifically for 4K broadcasting. He has already been supported by the largest rights holders, and the resource is actively developing.

Satellite broadcasts began in 2015. Much has changed since then.

4. It's all for the West Netflix and some of Amazon Prime are available for the Russian consumer. Thanks to some communities, a picture from 4K sources is combined with Russian-language voice acting from a lower quality (DVD or BluRay) version of the film, turning into a localized version. Forward linking is forbidden by modern rules to publish, but the seeker will always find it.

5. To view 4K you need expensive equipment. So far there is only a problem in the Russian language track. First of all, due to the lack of players. To make an online rip, many are not allowed by their hands and religion. In addition, most of the fresh UltraHD content abroad is sold in the form of Blue-Ray discs, and computer drives supporting this type of discs are difficult to find on sale.

Even players of this type of disc have appeared recently. Budget options (Onkyo TX-SR373 AV Receiver) are not yet widespread, and Microsoft Xbox One S ... So far no one has figured out how to rip with it. In the fall, much cheaper players with native 4K support appeared: the Asus Tinker Board for the developers and the cheap Chromecast Ultra. 6. From a distance of 2 meters, 4K is indistinguishable from FullHD More recently, they talked about HD-ready (720p). Then about TVs with support for FullHD (1080p). They still argue about Retina screens in mobile technology - are they needed or not on such small diagonals.

4K for the eye turns into FullHD at a distance of 2 meters.

If you have a 4K TV, you can confirm that you will notice the difference between FullHD and 4K even from 5 meters. Don't forget about pixel density. It was with the advent of UltraHD that it made sense to purchase huge screens for home use. Imagine HD even at 50 inches. So-so picture. And 4K at 65 inches? Or 70? Almost like FullHD for a 40-inch diagonal.

7. Expensive FullHD is better than cheap UltraHD LG is the largest manufacturer of UHD panels, followed by Samsung, Innolux, AU Optronics, China Star Optoelectronics Technology and BOE Technology. Any manufacturer can use someone else's matrix. Country of origin, brand are not important. Xiaomi often puts a good screen from Samsung or a bad one from LG. And Samsung allows itself to buy Chinese matrices - however, they are much better than those installed in some TVs.

It is the screen parameters that are important, not the manufacturer: brightness, contrast, high-quality backlighting.
