Introduction

The Chinese company, which managed to become relatively popular in Russia (to some extent thanks to us, don’t take it for immodesty), has released another metal smartphone. This time there is more metal in the budget (for China) or medium price category(For Russia). The collection has been replenished with Meizu M3s mini. It was decided to give such a pretentious name to the gadget just for us, since in the homeland it is simply called M3. However, it should be understood that the M3s mini and M3 are still different: the version for the Russian market has a metal case and the Android operating system, the battery capacity has slightly increased.

The price has not yet been decided, but according to rumors, a 2/16 GB smartphone will cost 12,000 rubles, and a 3/32 GB gadget will cost 14,000 rubles. Personally, it seems to me that it will be like this: 12,990 and 14,990 rubles. Sales in August.

Design, dimensions, controls

This time, Meizu designers did not particularly bother with the design of the novelty, so the M3s mini looks almost the same as the Pro 6: sloping edges, a flat back surface, a metal case, a scanner plus a touchscreen mechanical button, the location of some elements, etc. The only global difference: the back of the Pro 6 is completely made of aluminum, and in the case of the M3S mini, there are plastic inserts on top and bottom. A similar solution is used in many gadgets with a non-plastic socket.

The front side is protected by glass with a 2.5D shape, a thin chrome-plated edging is still made of plastic. By the way, a device came to me with a rather dead edging. On the one hand, this is not very good, since it will have to be photographed in such an unaesthetic form, on the other hand, you can immediately imagine what will happen to the smartphone after a certain amount of time.

The glass is durable, during the testing it did not “plant” a single scratch. Oleophobic coating is present. The quality is good, the finger glides over the screen surface easily.

Due to the compact dimensions and the extremely successful shape of the case, holding and using the Meizu M3S mini is a pleasure, especially after the “shovels”. The device is assembled firmly, no backlash, squeaks, punching to the battery.

There are a lot of colors for Meizu: dark gray, silver, gold and pink metallic. I hope that all of them will definitely be available to our consumers.

On top of the front panel there are light and proximity sensors (they work rather slowly), an indicator of missed events (bright, white), a camera and a speaker, covered with a metal mesh. Its volume is high, the timbre is pleasant, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly.

Below the screen is a touch-mechanical button, which is responsible for accessing home screen, "Back".

It is also a fingerprint sensor. The speed of operation completely satisfied me. Using the mTouch 2.1 scanner, you can not only block the smartphone from turning on, but also restrict access to any applications on the device using your fingerprint, including the programs and games you personally installed.

The scanner works no worse and no better than others.

At the bottom there is a microphone (left), microUSB and a speakerphone. The volume rocker and power button are on the right. Their stroke is minimal, the pressing is firm, there is a pleasant “click” sound, like on the iPhone.

On the left is a metal tray for sharing nanoSIM + nanoSIM or nanoSIM + microSD.

On the reverse side is a camera lens recessed into the body, below is a two-color LED flash, the inscription MEIZU.

Display

The Meizu M3S mini uses a 5-inch screen. Let me remind you that in M1 / M2 Note the diagonal is 5.5", in MX4 - 5.36", and in MX4 Pro - 5.5", in Pro 5 - 5.7", in Pro 6 - 5.2". top - 15.5 mm, bottom - 15, right and left - a little less than 4 mm.There is an anti-reflective coating.

The resolution of the Meizu M3S mini display is HD, that is, 720x1280 pixels, the density is 294 pixels per inch. The matrix is made using IPS technology without an air gap.

The maximum brightness of white is 400 cd/m2 (official data is 380), black is 0.59 cd/m2. Contrast - 677:1 (officially - 1000:1).

The white line is the goal we are trying to achieve. The yellow line is the actual screen data. You can see that we are almost directly below the target curve at values from 0 to 100%, which means that at each value the image is underlit. The yellow line is actually the average amount of red, green and blue.

The average gamma value is 2.12.

Judging by the level chart, blue is in excess, and red is in short supply.

At minimum brightness, the temperature is closer to 7800 K, on average - 7200 K

Judging by the diagram, the received data does not exceed the sRGB triangle, especially in the zone of green, red and blue colors.

Many gray points are located within the DeltaE=10 radius, which indicates that other shades will not be present in gray colors.

The viewing angles are maximum, under certain screen inclinations the picture is very yellow and violet. This suggests that the matrix here is one of the most budgetary.

Battery

This model uses a non-removable 3020 mAh battery.

When working with the device, the battery lasted for about 16-18 hours: about 20-30 minutes of calls per day, about 7 hours of using 3G / 4G (constant synchronization of mail, Twitter, WhatsApp, Skype, and so on), about 6 hours of Wi-Fi , several dozen photos, hours of listening to music.

In a more gentle mode, the gadget works up to 24 hours. If you leave only data synchronization (Wi-Fi), then you can count on two days. Up to 13 hours of continuous talk.

In movie mode (HD), the battery runs out after about 9 hours, in game mode, the battery lasts for about 3.5 hours, in sound playback mode at maximum volume - up to 50 hours.

The PC Mark Work Battery life application showed a result of 10 hours 37 minutes.

Unlike top models, the M3S mini does not have fast charging. Network adapter - 5 V and 2 A.

Communication options

The device is equipped with two nanoSIM slots. Both connectors support 3G/4G network (LTE CAT 6) in Russian frequencies: FDD-LTE / TD-LTE / TD-SCDMA / WCDMA / GSM.

Network types:

  • 2G GSM/GPRS/EDGE (900/1800/1900 MHz)
  • 3G WCDMA/HSPA+ (900/2100 MHz)
  • 4G FDD-LTE (1800/2100/2600 MHz)
  • 3G TD-SCDMA
  • 4G TD-LTE

The rest is standard: Wi-Fi (ac and b / g / n / ac) dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz / 5GHz) - sensitivity at the level samsung galaxy S6, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB connector (USB 2.0 with OTG support) for charging / synchronization. GPS navigation works without problems.

Memory and memory card

The smartphone will be available in two versions:

Reading speed internal memory(16 GB LPDDR3) - 72 Mbps, recording - 16 Mbps.

There is support microSD cards up to 128 GB.

cameras

The main module is 13 MP with phase focusing (5 lenses, aperture f2.2, the lens is protected by Gorilla Glass 3), and the front module is 5 MP (4 lenses, aperture f2.0). There is a dual LED flash with a warm and cold glow.

The image quality during the day completely satisfies me: accurate white balance, good dynamic range, relatively sharp picture. Focusing speed is fast thanks to phase detection autofocus. The accuracy is also excellent.

As for shooting at dusk or just in low light conditions, the camera shows an extremely poor result: a lot of noise, the image becomes blurry, the white balance often “walks”. However, almost all modules in the price category of devices up to 15,000 rubles behave in this way.

The front module is not too wide-angle. Photos are good and sharp.

The video is normal - FullHD at 30 fps during the day and 20 fps at night. The picture is average, the focus is also average. The sound is loud, clear, intelligibility is excellent, sensitivity is good. The selfie camera writes FullHD – it’s quite suitable for vlogging.

The usual manual settings for ISO, shutter speed, focus, and exposure remain. The rest is nothing new.

Performance and software platform

The Meizu M3S mini uses the MediaTek MT6750 chipset. Information about the chip appeared at the beginning of this year. This processor was created as a low cost solution with LTE Cat 6 as well as VoLTE, ViLTE and VoWiFi. Chip 8-core: one cluster consists of four Cortex-A53 cores running at 1 GHz, and is designed for light tasks; the second cluster consists of four high-performance Cortex-A53 cores operating at a frequency of 1.5 GHz, designed for demanding applications. Responsible for graphics ARM Mali-T860MP2 with support for OpenGL ES 3.1, OpenCL 1.2 and DirectX 11.1, capable of operating at frequencies up to 700 MHz. In MT6750 it operates at 650 MHz.

When the processor is under load, the case does not heat up so much (maximum 41-42 degrees), in the normal state (music, camera, pictures, network use) - 32-35 degrees.

The smartphone is very fast, no microlags or system slowdowns. Meizu has perfected the Flyme shell quite well, however, there are not so many functions in it.

With toys, not everything is clear: Unkilled shows unstable 13-22 fps, Dead Trigger 2 - stable 30 fps, Real Racing 3 - an average of 27, but the frames "jump" from 19 to 38 fps. Something like this…

A serious fight broke out between Xiaomi and Meizu, because these Chinese brands decided to conquer the market with their near-budget smartphones with far from budgetary characteristics by today's standards. And no sooner had the Meizu company updated the legendary Meizu m2 phone, which many users liked the price / quality ratio, as Meizu m3 came after meizu m3s.

Positioning and appearance

Initially, Meizu released two versions: Note-version and compact. The same can be seen in solutions from Xiaomi, take at least the latest Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 models and the reduced Xiaomi Redmi 3. As for meizu m3s- this is almost the same Meizu m3, but in an aluminum case. Apparently, the company decided to go the way of Xiaomi and release not only Note in metal. By the way, the smartphone practically adopted all its features from him: a stylish candy bar with rounded iPhone-like edges. Behind you can see a metal back and two plastic lining: top and bottom.

Unlike competitors from xiaomi phone stands out with a protective 2.5D glass with an oleophobic coating. Perhaps, just for the sake of this, it is worth changing the m2 mini to a metal novelty. It is also worth buying due to the fact that a fingerprint scanner has appeared in the home button, previously it was available only in expensive models.

Technical specifications

Now it's worth dwelling on the characteristics and the first thing worth mentioning is a high-quality five-inch display. The manufacturer left the HD resolution, which should have a positive effect on autonomy, especially since the device uses a 3020 mAh battery. The platform built on the MT6750 media processor is responsible for performance. The graphic part works on the Mali-T860MP2 chip. In terms of memory, there are two versions available: 16GB/2GB and 32GB/3GB storage and RAM respectively.

There is also an expansion slot that supports microSD cards up to 256 gigabytes. As for photographic capabilities, the camera shoots at about the same level as in previous models, because the smartphone uses a 13-megapixel sensor with a 2.2 aperture. It is difficult to predict whether the new m3s will repeat the success of the best-selling m2 mini on the domestic market, but one way or another, the smartphone deserves attention.

There are smartphones that you pick up and immediately want the same one for yourself, regardless of the price and technical characteristics. He is charming and at the same time very smart, and everything else does not matter. This is how you can characterize the hero of our today's review - Meizu m3 s.

Usually, when buying an ultra-budget phone, you don’t expect to get a nice device, and even more so from metal with excellent assembly. But Meizu m 3 s could. this is to suggest It has the external data of the flagship standard:

  • metal that pleasantly cools the hand;
  • 2.5D Xensation Cover, which creates a sense of integrity of the device.

Let's go over the location of the main elements. On the right side there is a volume rocker and a power button. On the bottom panel there is a speaker, a high-quality microphone and a charging connector. There is only a lone 3.5mm headphone jack on the top end. If we talk about the sound, then the sound in the headphones, then the external speaker feels slightly above average.

On the left is a tray where you can install either two nano SIM cards, or one SIM card and a memory card. The choice here is yours.

The front panel is covered with 2.5 D glass. In general, it looks good, but the metal frame still protrudes a little. Above the five-inch display with HD resolution are located:

  • front-camera;
  • good conversational speaker;
  • proximity and light sensors;
  • an event indicator that glows blue and white.

Under the display there is a physical button, which hides a good fingerprint scanner.

The rear panel is metal, but at the same time it has plastic inserts on top and bottom, which are in perfect harmony with it in color. Behind is:

  • camera;
  • two-color flash;
  • Meizu logo.

Meise m3 s feels very nice in the hand, as the smartphone fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

Display

As we mentioned earlier, there is a 5-inch display with an IPS matrix, which is very insidious. If you look at right angles at bright colors, then everything is fine, but if you tilt the screen, then the inversion of colors is noticeable. This is especially clearly seen in the dark areas of the image, where black turns into blue, then gray, then white.

The screen resolution is 1280*720 pixels, i.e. HD format. The display supports 10 single touches.

Claimed brightness is 380 cd/sq. m. In the bright sun it is difficult to see something, but at night with a minimum brightness, I don’t want to make the backlight smaller. The display has an oleophobic coating, which feels very nice when touched. If prints remain, then wipe them off very easily.

The screen looks decent for a smartphone priced at about 10 thousand rubles, despite even some color inversion at extreme angles.

Performance and autonomy

From iron, a processor from the MTK 6750 and a Mali-T860 video accelerator are installed here. In performance tests, the state employee showed:

  • AnTuTu - 38,056 points;
  • Epic Citadel on ultra settings - 50.4 fps;
  • 3DMark showed 9143.

Meizu m3s comes in two versions:

  • 2 GB RAM and 16 GB built-in;
  • 3 GB RAM and 32 GB internal.

But the user will not have access to the entire volume. For example, if you take the 16 GB version, then the user will be able to fill only 10. Everything else will go under system files. In any case, you can expand the built-in memory with a card, but to the detriment of one SIM card.

With games, the gadget, in general, copes quite well. The phone is running Android 5.1, which makes it possible to split the screen into two parts to display two applications at the same time. Unfortunately, the choice of applications that can be displayed on the second screen is quite limited.

Inside Meizu m3s, a 3000 mAh battery is installed. A full charge of the battery with a fairly active use will last for 1-2 working days. With autonomy, this is in order, especially considering that the smartphone has a thin, pretty body.

Camera

Meizu m3 s has two camera modules: the main one with 13 megapixels and the front one with 5 megapixels. During the day, the smartphone takes good pictures, but at night the problems begin. The camera here is not perfect, but for its price, in principle, it’s completely nothing. It's not worth picking up. But it has everything you need and even a little more.

By settings here you can set:

  • level;
  • grid;
  • manual exposure metering;
  • time;
  • location.

Of course, there is also a full-fledged manual mode, where you can change:

  • exposure;
  • contrast;
  • focus;
  • exposure;
  • saturation;
  • white balance, etc.

For those who like to take pictures in manual mode, Meizu m3 s will be a godsend.

An overview of the camera and sample photos can be viewed in the video below.

Results

Summing up, I want to give the phone a few pluses for:

  1. Appearance.
  2. Autonomy. For a 3000 mAh battery, the smartphone lasts quite a long time.
  3. Camera.

The cons include:

  1. Bug with a green screen in the camera.
  2. A fingerprint scanner that requires you to press a button instead of placing your finger to unlock your smartphone.
  3. The firmware is still not international, but universal and even rather Chinese.

Otherwise, I really like Meizu m3 s, even more than Redmi 3. But it's up to you to buy or not.

Video

Meizu M3s is a high-quality smartphone belonging to the budget class. The device got a metal case and decent performance. Its official announcement took place in June 2016.

Appearance and ergonomics

Thanks to the elegant metal case and elegantly rounded corners, the Meizu M3s looks very stylish. On the front, you can see a spectacular 2.5D glass that covers the entire front side of the device. Under the display is a mechanical button mTouch 2.1. It is not only responsible for navigation, but also allows you to instantly unlock your smartphone using the built-in fingerprint scanner. The screen is framed by a thin chrome frame, which makes the device even more attractive. The symmetrical bottom end has multimedia speaker grilles and a MicroUSB connector. The rear part is made of durable aluminum, but there are plastic inserts for antennas on the top and bottom. But the audio jack is located on the top end. It is worth highlighting the high-quality case materials and good assembly. At the same time, the smartphone looks quite expensive, and thanks to its compact size it is really convenient to use. Inside, a 3020 mAh battery is built in, which demonstrates excellent autonomy. Available colors: silver, gold, pink and grey. Dimensions: height - 141.9 mm, thickness - 8.3 mm, width - 69.9 mm, weight - 138 g.

Display

M3s got a compact 5-inch screen with excellent contrast. The resolution of the IPS-matrix is 1280 by 720 pixels. When creating such a display, full lamination technology was used. There is no air gap, so the picture is natural. There is an advanced oleophobic coating, which is an excellent remedy for scratches and marks. Maximum viewing angles are complemented by a rich image. The color temperature can be freely adjusted in the dedicated settings.

Hardware and performance

The M3c has an octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor, which is very energy efficient. Such a chip can operate at a frequency of 1500 MHz. There is a graphics accelerator Mali-T860. Traditionally for this manufacturer, there are several versions of the gadget on sale: with 16 GB of internal memory and 2 GB of RAM, as well as with 32 GB of RAM and 3 GB of RAM. There is support for memory cards up to 128 GB. Out of the box, the smartphone received the Android 5.1 operating system, as well as the exclusive Flyme shell. For example, in the AnTuTu test, the gadget is confidently gaining about 40,000 points. Modern games work well, but demanding projects can underestimate the graphics.

Communication and sound

The speaker in Meizu M3 s is moderately loud. In headphones, the sound is even better, there is a kind of power reserve even with an advanced headset. There are no problems with communication, since the interlocutor is heard clearly. It is possible to install two SIM cards. The phone supports LTE networks.

Camera

Meizu M3s is equipped with a 13-megapixel camera with f/2.2 aperture and dual LED flash. Photos are of good quality, especially during the day. There is a manual mode, as well as some other settings. There is also a 5-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture.

conclusions

In many respects, the M3s seems to be a quality budget smartphone, which, of course, is not deprived of certain shortcomings. But for the money, it's definitely worth it. The package includes the following accessories: charger, branded paper clip, power cable and documentation.

Pros:

  • Very high quality display.
  • Excellent materials and assembly.
  • Convenient and fast fingerprint scanner.
  • Long battery life.
  • Nice appearance.

Minuses:

  • The main camera is not the best way to shoot in the evening.
  • There are some problems with Chinese firmware.

Video reviews

Meizu or Xiaomi smartphones can hardly be called ideal, because you can find flaws in everything. But against the background of competitors, they look advantageous both because of the best price / quality ratio, and because many roughnesses play a minimal role for their audience. Today we will understand the advantages and disadvantages of Meizu M3s, the most affordable device in the company's lineup.

The editors thank the store "Socket" for the Meizu M3s smartphone provided for testing

Equipment

As always, the smartphone comes in a miniature box with modest contents: a charger, a cable, a couple of pieces of paper and a beautiful branded paper clip.

Design

Meizu updates the design of its smartphones about once a year. Previously Released resembled both rival Xiaomi and its own Meizu Pro 5, and the budget M3s is just a smaller version of it.

The design is familiar to every second model of any manufacturer - a back made of a sheet of metal, plastic inserts at the top and bottom for antenna operation, 2.5D glass on the front panel and a branded mTouch key to control the system.

Apart from the obvious size difference with the 5.5-inch M3 Note, we found exactly two differences. First, a chrome frame has now appeared around the glass, more typical of Xiaomi, Huawei and Samsung, and second, pink has been added to the silver, dark gray and gold colors of the case.

Despite being secondary, the design makes a good impression. Meizu M3s is normally assembled, the case materials are of high quality and in general it looks more expensive than it costs.

The dimensions are standard for 5 inch models, there are frames of medium width around the screen. The device should appeal to fans of small devices - compared to large smartphones, it is more convenient to use.

The controls are located familiarly and conveniently - these are two physical keys on the right, 3.5 mm and MicroUSB connectors on the top and bottom, a hybrid tray for two NanoSIMs on the left.

There is no manufacturer's logo on the front panel, it is almost perfectly symmetrical. To the right of the speaker, an indicator of missed events is hidden under the glass.

Screen

As we have already said, the younger model differs from the Meizu M3 Note with a screen reduced to 5 inches with HD resolution. The backlight brightness of the IPS matrix varies from 7.7 to 397 cd / m², the measured contrast ratio is 1 to 698.

As for a budget smartphone, the screen is well calibrated and has a calm natural color reproduction. By adjusting the color temperature, you can adjust it for yourself.

Let the screen get more modest characteristics, but the image still remains smooth. Viewing angles are not maximum, but sufficient, as are the brightness levels. Good display for a budget smartphone. I didn’t like the weak response to pressing on the edges of the screen, but I hope that this is a problem exclusively with the test sample.

Platform

The company chose the new budget MediaTek 6750 chip as the M3s hardware platform - it has 8 Cortex-A53 cores in two clusters with frequencies of 1 and 1.5 GHz, respectively. Integrated graphics - Mali T860. The smartphone is available in two configurations, with 16 and 2 GB of memory and 32 and 3 GB. A memory card can be installed instead of the second NanoSIM - you will have to think about which configuration to choose and what is more important.

The smartphone does not show any special results in benchmarks, but for its class it works smartly - there are no lags in everyday mode, and insufficient platform performance becomes noticeable only when actively switching between programs or launching heavy games.

If you want to get the highest possible speed, it is better to select the “Productive” power mode in the settings.

There are also no critical remarks for the rest of the functionality. Wi-Fi and GPS work as expected, and the speakers sound quite normal. The call is not of super-quality, the company's expensive models sound noticeably better, but you can't call it bad either - this is a normal level of budget devices. A similar situation when listening to music on headphones is quite loud and clear.

A fingerprint scanner is built into the key below the screen. The accuracy of its work is comparable to more expensive smartphones, but the response is a little slower - most likely the performance of the platform affects.

In addition to locking the device, it is possible to protect the launch of individual applications with a password or fingerprint.

Working hours

A smaller battery is another simplification of the model, but given the screen diagonal, its resolution and platform performance, the 3020 mAh built-in battery looks quite convincing.

Most will be able to get about two days of work from it, and in heavy mode of use, the smartphone will last a day without problems.

shell

As operating system stands familiar to all owners of Meizu Flyme OS version 5.1, built on the basis of Android 5.1. It does not have an application menu, the normal integration of the Google Now assistant, but there is a rather nice laconic design.

A single mechanical key is used to control the system. A simple touch works like “Back”, a touch is responsible for returning to the home screen (“Home”), and the list of running applications is called up by swiping from the bottom of the screen. Such a control scheme requires a little getting used to, but it happens quickly and then it becomes not so convenient to use other smartphones.

By the Chinese plug in the box, you can understand that it was not the international version of the smartphone that was tested. However, the seller has already managed to install a "global" firmware with localization and Google services(Flyme 5.1.5.0G). So this Meizu can be reflashed (there are instructions on the specialized forums).

At the same time, a couple of extra pre-installed programs appeared out of the box, including the annoying Clean Master. They can be removed using third-party software and built-in root rights. Similar nuances of use are characteristic of many Chinese smartphones.

cameras

The main camera of the smartphone is similar to the one installed in the Meizu M3 Note - the same 13 megapixels and aperture f / 2.2. If the camera was rather weak for the older model, then it looks more appropriate in an affordable device.

With proper skill, you can take relatively good photos on it. The main thing is to twitch your hands less and not rush, especially since autofocus is average in speed. At night it is best to use the manual mode, then there is a chance to stay with the photo, and not with something remotely resembling it. As with the rest of Meizu, the HDR mode is not very usable, as it often takes blurry photos.

The 5 megapixel front camera shoots absolutely nothing, especially with an eye on the price of a smartphone.
